Do you use fungicides when germinating seeds?

If yes which one?

I, too, would like to hear recommendations from experienced germinators.

I use Dacosil and it's going very well.

Do you soak the seeds in Daconil ... or just spray it on before sowing in the germinating mix?

Posted

No, I only soak in warm water and put in coco fibrous with slight fungicide.

for example:

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis seeds

I soak the seeds for 2 days and soak the seeds with METALAXIL for 2 hrs.

and put all seeds on coco fibre (deep=diameter seeds).

1 month ago they are sprout 85%

My experience some palm seeds soak only several hrs.

eg. Pseudophoenix seeds if soak 2 days ---> seeds get rot.

Dear Friends  :)

to the best of my knowledge goes, the fresh seeds never need anything special.for me only after germination and repotting my young saplings die of damp-off !

but i dip my seeds in bleach solution such 30 minutes before placing the seeds in the baggie or ziploc bags..

And as some have pointed out that socking seeds for more than 3 days becomes meaningless since they rot easier than sprout !

love,

Kris  :)

Kris that's all conected.

If you don't put your seeds through fungicides (or sometimes bleech is enough) it can happen later that your young seedlings "damp off".

Of course you newer now which one will survive but that's why it's good tu use fungicide as a precaution.

Seedlings can also damp off due to overwatering.

check out a wettable powder like Captan 50.  it is convenient because you can mix it with the soil itself, or you can add water and spray your plants with it.  for germinating, just sprinkle a little powder on top of the medium every few weeks and be sure to water right after.

Justin, i was looking for something like that.

It sounds good and i can buy it over here.

Thanks for you advice.

ps. in what ratio with water to use it?

I would mix it with water and then water my medium with seeds...

What I have used is a solution of Zerotol, which is just hydrogen dioxide (I believe the same thing as the "hydrogen peroxide" that is sold over the counter in drug stores as an antiseptic). It is supposed to deal with both fungal and bacterial cultures. I soak for 20-30 minutes after 2-3 days of soaking in tap water. I still have a few losses of germinating seeds, especially Pseudophoenix.

This practice is sort of "voodoo", in that I don't have any scientific background in this area, just emulating what others have told me.

Hi, Pivi:

Captan is N-trichloromethylthiocyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide; it contains no copper

I use Mancozeb. I coat the seeds just prior to sowing and i have very good results!  I bought a 3gallon tub of it about 5 years ago and i still have a little bit left, and i have sown thousands of seeds w/ it! The bonus to Mancozeb is that you can spray it on the fronds of Date palms (or others) for spot leaf fungus as well, it's multi-purpose! I bought it at Lesco, but i'm sure you can get it off the web if you don't have a Lesco near you.
