Correct procedure for wrapping a palm tree

Is the following method correct and is there room for improvements:

Stuff hay at the growing point, then tie up the fronds. Wrap it in 4 layers of burlap followed by a strip of incandescent christmas lights. Lastly a couple layers of frost cloth and a plastic bag to keep it dry and protect it from wind more.

I always attach lights directly to the trunk, then moving blankets, then plastic if it's going to be wet.  @Allen has a great thread about protection methods that has all the info you could need.

Thanks. Is it likely to be fatal if the lights are in direct contact with the spear or near it? I dont mind a little bit of burnage.

Speaking only from my experience, the mini lights have never burned anything.  C9's will 100% burn plants, blankets, melt plastic, etc, so I only use those when I can loosely lay around the base of small palms if I'm tenting them.
