This is the first year that I’m not going to protect my needle palm until it gets too cold for it

IMG_3925.thumb.jpeg.806a8d1cf263c0dbe0b106b989216320.jpeg

So far, a cold event brought it down to 18 degrees, and it’s currently 29 out. No damage at all on it so far. Tonight it’s supposed to get down to 19f, so it will go through basically the same temp twice.

IMG_3926.thumb.jpeg.c64138d99ae9fa0fe26f4a93523eb371.jpegIMG_3927.thumb.jpeg.94844a0107c46b6bfce7ef8d4b9034cc.jpeg

Also, I forgot about these little Washingtonia and Sabal seedlings behind it, so far the Sabal Causiarum has less damage than the Washy hybrid. Already know that they probably aren’t going to make it to next year but I guess It see how far they can go.

I am growing a couple of 3 gallon needle palms in pots for a season or two before trying them in the ground here. One is from Brighter Blooms (top pic) and one is from Northeast Ohio Palms (bottom pic).

The combination of Lake Michigan and urbanization nearby add some warmth to my yard. I have a spot 6-8 feet from the southeast side of my house next to a sidewalk where I hope to plant these.

Overall it isn't very hot. Not many 90's during the summer. I am counting on a microclimate with: southeast exposure, nearby foundation river rock band, adjacent cement sidewalk, and 3 stories of building structure behind it.

Right now it just has a pop up greenhouse over it to protect it from moisture, but besides that its fine. Ima really protect it when temperatures get below 10 degrees. Will post another pic soon.

My smaller needle palm from NE Ohio Palms has struggled, so I added a grow light to help it catch up and thrive.

The best thing to do with those plants is to get buy them is spring and plant them when they arrive. My mistake was buying a sabal minor from them in March and then leaving it until late April before i planted it. It ended up with transplant shock and it died. But it was a sabal so it was definitley more sensitive withhaving its roots disturbed.

No. Leave everything alone for now. Trim as needed in the active growing season.

Just repotted this palm a few days ago when I confirmed it was starting spring growth. Indeed, I discovered that i did overwater it in the fall (and used too heavy a potting soil mix). Many of the old roots were stunted/rotted/dead, but new roots were visible growing. Forgot to take pictures.  Repotted it in a signficantly lighter mix. Hoping for a good growing season.

I’m in a similar climate to both of you. Lake Erie helps with our winter temps. We didn’t get below 0 this winter. What palm should I choose? Sabal minor or Rhapidophyllum hystrix? I basically have the best possible microclimate for it. Southeastern exposure, next to concrete and a house. We also get lots of snow cover from Erie where I’m at. What should I choose? Zone 6 NE Ohio.

I’m thinking a Sabal would do better in our cold and wet winters but idk if it’ll survive the negative temps we get. Could I protect it very minimally by putting a little cloth cold protective house on it?

A larger S. minor would do better the 1st winter or 2.  Under 0F, certainly under -5F it would be best to protect with a leaf cage or something.  Established & by the house it might do fair down to -5F.   In the open under 5F mine leaf spot, under 0F they start to take more damage
