Just as a side note, anyone living in the Parrish FL area, the new Lowe’s they built here seems to carry more exotic things than most of the other big box stores around here. I’ve seen Latania there recently and they also had a couple Archontophoenix there today which I resisted. Not since the Home Depot in Sun City Center in Hillsborough county around 2005 or 2006 have  seen a box store this far north carry anything too interesting. Must be a palmy person in charge of ordering inventory there right now 😉

Yes they have stepped up there game a little bit it does depend on the manager and the climate (cold) but those grower supplying those good plants are taking a hit in money being locked into contracts and having to take what they offer in price or we don’t buy them I can supply a chain store in Australia but they don’t or won’t give me the money I want for my plants eg Johannesteijsmannia Altifrons for $15 aus dollars no thanks I will grow them on and sell to a real collector who will give me what I want and deserve for my hard work and knowledge not to mention how hard it is now to import such quality seeds but that being said i will admit they do have the odd good plant I did see monsteria borsigianum variegated for $260 two leaf cuttings for sale but no anthurium warocqueanum yet or sabinara magnifica 🤣

To be fair, I buy most of my native palms (and other native plants) from the native plant nursery here in Parrish called Sweet Bay Nursery. I totally know that it is best to support the local sellers. Just sometimes it is hard to resist a good deal at the box store. And the native nursery would not and should not carry Latania or Archontophoenix… so the box stores do have their place in proliferating interesting, and possibly successful palms to the masses. I do think if I ever move from this house I will try to create a “tropical looking” landscape utilizing only species native to areas within a 200 or 300 mile radius from where I move. I think I could pull off an incredible “native” landscape given those constraints and I bet you all in Australia could do even better 😉

You gotta do what you gotta do in the situation at hand as they say I think from my failing memory there is only about 4 palm species native to my area and 3 species of cycas my property has macrozamia Fawcetti growing wild and lepidozamia peroffskyanna and macrozamia Johnsonii are in the adjacent valleys

@happypalms glad the new palms arrived safely! The reality is I’m far from professional and operating on a very small scale but I like to think I take a lot of care with packaging and have a pretty effective strategy now.

@marc84 unfortunately I’m only experienced with selling within Australia and don’t have a website, I’m only a small hobby grower.

Another small order of some of mother nature’s gifts of beauty this time a Zamia variegata dypsis lantzeana calyptrocalyx benga dawn and five browneopsis ucayalina seeds they shall get potted up and put into the greenhouse for a couple of winters and see what happens as to where and when they get planted the benga dawns may live in pots pushing the calyptrocalyx zone in my area it might be to cold so indoors in winter an all round winner in palms for my collection

Some more plants for the collection this time a licuala triphylla heliconia Irrasa and a rothmania longiflora now all I have to do is wait around two or three years to plant them out when they get a bit bigger I used to plant a lot of tube stock plants originally when I established my garden but that was when it rained a lot more but now my established garden eats tube stock plants alive with so much competition for water and light and falling branches and palm leaves doing damage but I still get some tube stock to grow through just not super rare palms that need attention unless I have a couple of hundred to throw around like chambeyronia or chamaedorea palms

A couple more plants for the collection a licuala corneri Areca Tonku and a philodendron davidsonii they will get winter protection for a couple of seasons then it’s into the greenhouse and eventually in the ground I repotted them I only repot my exotics in the warmer months never in autumn or winter only when it has warmed up to around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius in the night temperature the same for fertiliser only in the warmer months for exotics and tropical varieties

Oh those palms are so pretty, I love them both.  I planted a Philo. Davisonii in the garden a couple of years back and it sulked so I dug it up, shoved in a pot and put it on the back porch. It's now taking up too much space so I am going to have to plant it again. Same story with the bird nest anthurium. It was so pretty and cute but turned into a giant monster in 18 months. Palms and Aroids are too beautiful to resist most of them time and I pay the penalty with lack of space eventually.

Nice palms 🌴  yes I agree even cold hardy palms if shipped from a warmer climate I have killed from planting in November and such when it is 25 in the day and 10 in the night mostly.

Even a really small Parajubaea torallyi died after planting in winter, without watering it too much.

I had a Butia as well that died in the same tempratures. arguebly I was overwatering that one like hell.

My first Bismarck died in like a week in fairly warm wheater as well.

25/10 celcius

True the palms that died for you are pretty tough palms it’s heart breaking to kill a rare plant the cold wet combination is not a good thing for exotics and tropical plants I try to overwinter new plants for a couple of years also any tropical growth even in good conditions they still cop a hard time with the tropical leaves needing to have new leaves acclimatised which is usually another two years of growing in the ground so around 4 years to get new rare tropical varieties established in the garden

Buying a couple more for the collection that’s forever getting bigger it’s an addiction that can only be cured by buying more plants there is no cure for plant addiction I didn’t even try to stop no use iam only going to buy more this time a lanonia calciphila memeycylon species and a anthurium terticollectivium should supply my fix for another week mail order just gives you more choices of rare plants as the local nurseries (the ones still in business) have mostly been shut down for various reasons and they only supply common money making plants that’s not for my style of gardening

I'm also guilty of being a compulsive plant buyer. I received 6 shipments today (3 of seedlings and 3 seed orders), and more are in the "pipeline". As far as I can tell, there is no cure for this addiction.

My addiction to palms and aroids doesn't get fed anywhere near as often as I would like it to be. My succulent addiction is also similarly controlled but due to lower prices (not always though) and easy availability I fall off the wagon every couple of weeks.  Permanent penury and and a glorified courtyard for a garden limits my insatiable desire to purchase every new palm or aroid I learn about.

I could only image an addictive personality on top of a plant obsession a recipe for disaster you would tremble just walking past a weed in a nursery wanting to buy it  🤣

Another fix of palms for the Garden this time a Mauritia flexuosa pinanga distichia lanonia centralis Socrates rostrata a rothmania longifolia a philodendron hybrid Jerry Horne and some cycas species silver form seeds some real winners in there for the garden the standard treatment awaits them winter protection for two seasons giving them some time to develop more roots then planted in the ground although I don’t think the pinanga will go in the ground pushing the palm limits with that one

Lanonia centralis should do well for you. It can get quite chilly in their habitat, but I’d expect they’d have good heat tolerance too. Definitely on my wish list, good potential for cooler climates.

Okay you made me envious of the new Satakentias, Licualas and Calyptrocalyx. The others are nice palms too but so slow growing ....I like to get results quickly.  Speaking of which, I thought I got an amazing deal on some palms this week. Posted monday,  arrived on tuesdays and potted up. Dead by thursday !! 2 seem to be just hanging on ....that will teach me not to deal with people not in the Palm Talk family.
