Planting a royal palm in mallorca attempt 2

Recommended Posts

Hey, so I planted royal palm last spring, and it didn't work out, Not sure why maybe because of lack of water, some kind of infection and the most possible one, transplant shock and spear jam.

My plan is to try again because I love this palm and it deserves another attempt. The spot where I want to put it has semi shade, what I mean is that it has filtered sun because there is a big jacaranda just on top. Soil is okay, and the only problems would be the shade, proximity to my wodyetia and right beside my terrace literally a meter from my terrace. It would be facing east and some trees protecting from the north.

I would do a big hole, 1 meter deep and maybe 80cm-1m wide, mix some sand and compost with the native soil and then as mulch volcanic gravel. Palm size 2 meters.

Any tips to not commit any mistake?

What's your guys opinion?

Will you get one growing in a pot since germination?  Or will you get one dug out of the ground?  I am not an experienced horticulturalist, but given recent posts on PalmTalk about royal palms in southern California, I think a smaller royal growing in a pot since germination may be a better choice than a larger one dug out of the ground.  With good conditions, royal palms grow quickly.

Thanks for your reply, I bought two palms one from babypalms that I think that it has been growing in a pot all is life and another one that's bigger from an unknown place probably some nursery in mainland Spain I will ask tough, probably grown in pot too. But will it affect if it is a field grown palm?

Again, I am not an experienced horticulturalist, but I think a field grown palm that has been dug up and transplanted will experience much more shock than a potted palm that has been planted into the ground, as long as the potted palm is not already much too big for its pot.  I hope you get replies from wiser persons.  Would you like to post pictures of the planting site?

Hey, true, a field grown palm would have more stress than a potted one, I believe than the ones from this garden center come from a nursery in mainland Spain and have been growing in a pot. Field grown palms at that size are not really a thing in spain. I will upload some photos of the planting site tomorrow.  Which is the best fertiliser for royals ?

Thanks.
