Should I top dress some compost around my palms going into winter?

Hey all, I have a frost prone location and I am wondering if putting down some compost going into winter would be a net positive or negative for my somewhat frost tender palms?

An alternative thought was to put down some Sul-Po-Mag.

There have been a few reports that placing a layer of large stones around palms can elevate both the soil, and air temperature, but there has to be several hours of sunlight as well.

I guess what I'm wondering is if it would cause the palm to try and push too much tender new growth going into winter, as opposed to helping the palm stay healthy from more beneficial soil activity.

No it should be fine. You mean compost that is finished right or do you plan to make a hot pile around your palm?
