Jubaeopsis caffra…Let’s See ‘Em!

Featured Replies

Would love to see photos of anyone else’s Jubaeopsis caffra. Mine’s been a very slow grower until more recently. Nearly eighteen years old and it’s seemed, for several years, that it was barely growing at all. Here’s the one in my front yard that I’m limiting to two trunks due to lack of enough space for multiple ones.

Post away!

Same thing with this one . It sat and sat and sat which seemed like forever . And one day it started moving and it’s been pretty consistent since . It will be cool to see it in 10 Years side by side with the reclinata behind it .

I have another one that either needs the ice plant that took over cleared from around it or I need to move It come spring . The ice plant has overgrown to the point it is having a hard time getting the water it needs . I think even if the ice plant is cleared I will be battling that ice plant for years to come

My biggest is about 18 years old as well  The second went in I don't know a few years later.JubaeopsisCaffra-20230910_140633.thumb.jpg.b5b62df33ed9fbc1651cb189889af522.jpg

I’ve got 3 from a seed batch 6 years ago. The one still in a pot is probably the pick of the bunch but don’t have a recent photo of it. One in the ground since 2020 never stabilised despite my attempts using a stake and I think it’s finally giving up. This is the other in the ground, I put it in last year and it’s looking good so far albeit quite slow.

These plants are so cool but absolute snails. I have no patience for Jub. Caffra. 😅

I agree with Dave...plant one anyway! So often in life we make excuses based on "I'm waiting because I still don't know what I want to do over in this area" or "it's so damned slow." Five years from now you may still be staring at empty ground...and if you had just put it down into the ground, you'd have something really unusual and beautiful to look at. Small, slow-growing plants like this species can be planted amongst fun things like gingers, heliconias, bananas, other fast-growing, rewarding plants that can be removed at a certain point...when, one day, that little thing hiding in the back turns out to be something very much worth enjoying on its own.

All the photos above are beautiful and remind me how much I love Jubaeopsis. Aside from its small stature and sometimes gawky clumps, it is, to me, the most coconutty-looking non-coconut that I've ever laid eyes upon.

And where does everybody obtain these? Is there a secret vendor somewhere here in California? I've never seen one for sale.

I’m sure there are some Out there . I grew some from a bunch of seed last year that should have been nice 1 gallons by now . But everyone of them rotted off when they shot their first leaf up . Going to give it another shot this year and do things a little differently . So I’m sure there are some 1 gallons out there somewhere

RPS has seed in portions ranging from 10 to 1000. Jungle Music has been selling them for at least the last 15 years (I've bought 3), but they ran out about a month ago. The last one I bought has grown from having 12" long leaves to it's current 3' leaves in 9 years (the other 2 are at my last residence). I'm almost certain they'll be selling more soon. I would contact Phil or Jesse for availability.

I have two planted next to each other but one is in a sunny position and grows in a hole filled in with pumice, the other is shaded by the fronds of Phoenix loureiroi, which I dare not cut off during warm season thank to lurking rpw, and grows in a spot with soil cemented by the root system of a removed hybrid Phoenix. Guess which one grows faster and better lol!

No. Very hard to find. All my research told me this palm loathes FL 6-7 month summer swelter and shows its displeasure by dropping dead. To my knowledge no one in FL has grown a live/healthy specimen

So here’s mine. It was planted about 8 years ago at the very southernmost boundary of my yard, so nothing would block the sun. I'd taken out a big pepper tree which had finally rotted (and made great firewood for a number of winters). It's about 10 feet (3.1 M) tall overall, and more or less as wide, with two stems.

Coming along nicely, if I do say so.

Indeed, luckily I'm not actually a skeleton... yet!

Saw this a couple of weeks ago while shopping for a plant to give as a gift. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought it was Jubaeopsis caffra when I first spotted it. I’ve only seen one other planted out.

Ed Brown in Jacksonville has a Jubaeopsis poking up over his house.  He grew it from seed.  I've tried a few one gallon plants from CA in Northeast Florida that died in the summer.  I think palms that don't like the summer in Florida have a better chance if grown from seed.  I'm having luck with Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) decipiens after three summers from seed.  I think @Scott W has a Jubaea and Parajubaea torallyi in Jacksonville he grew from seed.  Ed , do you have any pictures of your Jubaeopsis?

Here is an awful photo of the one in leu gardens I took this past may.  Looking pretty good but still very young.

Jacksonville is 350 miles north and has much colder winters and shorter summers. FL has a huge climatic range.

How about a healthy specimen in Miami, Naples, Ft. Myers? Anybody?
