Nurseries in Palm Springs area?

Recommended Posts

We drove down from Norcal for the Power Trip festival here in Indio - and Maiden were pretty epic last night as they always are! Looking forward to a little Priest and AC/DC tonight. 🤘🤘🤘

We’re looking to pick up a few things for my girlfriend’s yard - mules in particular - but are calling around the nurseries and no one even knows what a mule is!

Are there ANY half decent nurseries in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert/Indio area?

Any recommendations appreciated!

Moller's is the "Beverly Hills" of nurseries in the Coachella Valley, unfortunately also at Beverly Hills prices. It is on the border of Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert right off the 111 on Painter's Path. They have a wide array of unusual Euphorbias, Alluaudia, Agave, Cactus, etc. As far as palms go, they have unusual things like Brahea nitida, triangles, Bismarckia, and others but prices can be crazy. They actually have some "decently" (that is relative!) priced Bismarckia right now in smaller containers, usually Bismarcks go for like $300 at the Big Box stores here (they're never sold in small sizes) and often more expensive at Moller's but I just noticed last week some for I think about $150-200. This is still too much in my opinion...but it is an interesting nursery with some unusual tropical things, lots of Ixora, Plumeria, flowering trees (overpriced Delonix in large containers and boxes), things like Bursera fagaroides, shrubs and vines, and they have a little greenhouse right at the front that you shouldn't forget to go into, with a rack of unusual small plants that can be affordable. Sometimes other plants can be affordable but it's a crapshoot. They have Keitt mangos, very large in 5gal pots for about $89 right now. Manilas are I think $80.

There is also a pretty good nursery over in Indio called Bob Williams Nursery, they have some good tropicals and prices are much, much more reasonable, but it is a little bit of a schlep from Palm Springs, but not too bad (about 30 minutes from downtown PS if you route yourself using I-10).

There are some small nurseries, many latino-owned nurseries around Thousand Palms-Bermuda Dunes that supposedly have good stuff popular in Mexico like Delonix and various other unusual things. You have to just check listings and their websites, many are wholesale during the week and only open to the public Saturday mornings. Gardeners have told me about these places but I never seem to write down the names...

I assume @Danilopez89Ā must know many of the unusual mom-and-pop "hidden gems" and perhaps some other bigger nurseries that stock more interesting stuff. I for one have never seen a mule for sale, nor planted, out here, which is in itself rather bizarre.

Otherwise you might just want to drive over to the Home Depot and the Lowe's over on Monterey near Gerald Ford. They have their own regionalized palette of big-box things, lots of cactus and succulents including Adenium, Alluaudia, Fouquieria, etc., also Manila mangos and various guavas, etc., and you can get big 15gal Butias for killer prices (as low as $40-$60 for a surprisingly big palm). You will sometimes find large foxtails at the HD on Monterey, and recently they had a boatload of large travelers trees, though I noticed last week they're all gone now. Always best to visit these places BEFORE you go to Moller's or other pricey places since the difference in price can be quite dramatic for the same plants, from the same suppliers...

Thanks for the tips! We are staying in Indio by the venue so just hit up Bob Williams. Nothing too exotic, but we picked up some nice Livistona, Chamaerops, and Rhapis for my girlfriends yard. Threw in a big Zamia for my yard - never see those up north!

Bruce Dickinson moves and sings better thanĀ

Most men half his age.Ā  I saw them for the 1st time in 92, saw them last in 14 probably.Ā  Nothing had changed, consumate professionals! Add in a giant Satan with laser beam eyes and a liberal dose of Eddie,Ā  it even won over my pop and top 40 country loving wifeĀ šŸ‘

Tool will be a good show, they always are.Ā  I'm curious how Brian Johnson will sound, he's not defying the reaper like Bruce.Ā

AC/DC was surprisingly tight actually - Brian Johnson did really well for being old, a smoker, and deaf! Judas Priest is always awesome - Halford still has his range.Ā
Ā

Just Tool and Metallica to go now!

Years back I did some work near L.A.

Nursery prices were double or triple what they were in Florida, even 20 years ago.
