Trithrinax campestris and Trithrinax schizophylla

I was wondering who's growing one of these? Where'd you get them? How do they do in your climate? Under what sort of conditions do they thrive? In what kind of soil, how much water?

I have 2 campestris, one I've grown from a strap leaf from Jungle Music, I got it well over a decade ago. It was happy until recently, now I'm having issues with chlorosis. I potted it up and I'm fertilizing with iron, hoping for the best. My other campestris looks great, as does my one schizophylla. I ordered a bunch of campestris seeds on ebay and I've been lucky enough to get a few to germinate.

Here's a beautiful schizophylla I saw at the San Diego Botanical Garden earlier this year.

I have 2: 1 from TCHP, and the other from JM. They seem to do as well as my other fan palms here. Most of the year they thrive in full sun, but through our last brutally hot summer, there was some minor sun scald. The soil is around half coir, and the other half pumice. I water them the same as I do with Sabal and Brahea.

I really wish TCHP was still around, he had everything, especially for my climate.

How big is your Trithrinax?

The Trithrinax campestris from JM was about 1' wide, and 8" high in '14 when I first planted it. It's now 18" wide (clustering), and 1' high (slow). The TCHP was 4" wide, and 6" high in '17. It's now 8" wide (small cluster), and 9" high (slow).

Not the best picture. Haven't spent much time with the palms this year. Usually I take a bunch of photos at the end of summer but didn't this year. I'm going to have to trim back some leaves again in spring on it otherwise it'll be extremely difficult to avoid getting stabbed if I want that nice manicured look 😬

At the pace it's growing, every 2 years it'll have to be done until the trunks get taller. I prefer the look of a full crown on these.

These might be one the most dangerous and slow palm species, but I think they're not utilized enough in the USA. I grew 2 in San Diego, and it took around 7 years before their growth rate increased. Once they get well rooted, they grow a little faster than Chamaerops or Brahea.

Absolutely incredible palms James! Do you have an age estimate?

Thanks Tad!

@Tom in Tucson, thanks Tom

I bought it from Jungle Music in 2009 I believe as a small 5 gallon. Let's say it was 5 years from seed roughly, so around 19 years old..

It did nothing in its pot for 3 years until I planted it in the ground 2012. Once it was in the ground it took off!
