First flower on mystery Dypsis / Chrysalidocarpus

One of my favorite palms is flowering for the first time. It’s most likely a hybrid so the seed might not be viable but I’ll still try to sprout some.

that last picture shows Chrysalidocarpus sp. Lafazamanga on the right which is always flowering and seeding. Maybe it can somehow cross with the mystery hybrid?

Jason, whatever it is……it’s amazing. As @96720 said, the frond color is way dark. Even more contrasting when planted next to the Lafamazanga.

Beautiful hybrid Jason, what a robust specimen. Your lafazamanga looks terrific as well. I can’t, ( well I can), believe how things have grown in the last few years,

Bueno dude!

That is legit the coolest Dypsis/Chyrsalidocarpus palm I’ve ever seen. I would definitely buy some seed if it produces any viable ones.

With how robust it is and how dark green those leaflets are it almost looks like a:

Bef/Leucomalla

or

Ambositrae/Leucomalla

This. 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻

Leucomalla is top 3 for me I think. It’s a favorite.

When I bought it 5 or so years ago, Suchin mentioned it could be Bef x Hankona.  It was a 4" plant when I got it.  Eventually it split in two, just like Bef does and has the bright white crownshaft like Hankona.  So that's the best guess that I have, and if anyone would know, it would be Suchin.

Ahh, I have this plant too. Came in as Hankona. This was the one I texted you a few years back that I thought it had Bef in it. Yours is huge. Didn’t even recognize it.

I remember that, but not sure this is the same as anything that I saw shipped to california as Hankona.   I thought they were a few years ago.  I have some of those as well and they ended up growing into something very different than this one.  So not sure really.

Marcus had plants that came off his Hankona. They grew, it was obvious they were a hybrid. That’s the one I was talking about with you back in the day. Young, it looked like a larger Bef. Then you found out Bef is next to their Hankona. Of course can’t be 100%, but I would be willing to bet the farm that’s what a few gardens here have is a Hankona x Bef. I’ll get a pic of mine tomorrow. Really pretty plant. Hopefully, what I have grows into that plant you are showing here as it is a very attractive plant.

Yeah, totally different. Lutescens looking mixed in while small. Amazing it became that plant above now in flower. Also funny how that went from that size to seeding in 5 years. Got to love Hawaii :)

9 months later - Feb. 2019.  Amazing how much it greened up once it got in the ground, and started to show the white and red coloring.  While it did look like an anemic Lutescens when I got it, I think the yellowing was due to the fact that it was in a 4" pot for way too long.

Jason I think this may be the same plant but just different growing conditions from Hawaii to SoCal (sorry for the poor quality pic). This also came in as Hankona from Marcus but had that hybrid vigor from the get go.

I showed Jason these in a text, but since you posted this plant here, figured I would post mine. I have the same. It’s a killer palm huh? I totally missed seeing yours this weekend. Too many other plants to drool over.

Looks awesome Len. How long has this been in the ground? Got it as a 4” FB plant or?

I think it went into the ground from a 7. I got it from the OP Jason before he moved to Hawaii in 2018??? Hybrid vigor for sure. True Hankona is ridiculously slow! I think Dennis Willoughby had 25 years into his and it was this size before it died this winter.

Wow that's a stunner! I remember seeing pictures of this palm when it was younger. I'm not even going to try and speculate on the cross but bef sounds like one side of the story.  I would like one please 😊

My best pure Hankona with close to 30 years on the clock. Others of the same age are still waist to shoulder height!

Looking good. I do think that Hankona hybrid is somewhat different than mine that is posted here and is now flowering. However, I do have this same palm (I think) that you and Len have.

bought this as Hankona from Floribunda. It’s very fast and has regular leaflets. True Hankona has irregular almost plumose leaflets and like Len said, is very slow!

They both look great Jason! That's why I love Chrysalidocarpus/Dypsis so much, there always seems to be another mystery around the corner. Your new (and old/current) place looks amazing by the way!

Thanks for the compliments. If you’re ever on the big island, let me know and stop by.

And I completely agree about loving these Dypsis mysteries. And just to keep it going, here’s another Palm I got from Floribunda a couple years ago, also as Hankona, the coloring is really cool.
