I hate to bring this up but WHY?? Why would someone do this?

I will never understand this.

Why even have palm trees at this point. Might as well just throw a bunch of wooden posts up as landscaping.

I did not want to click on this, but my hand, unbidden, was compelled to move the mouse and my finger twitched and clicked.  Oh the sorrow and anger I could have saved myself if I had just kept scrolling!  Such ugly mutilation, a mockery of what was beautiful!

W. robusta  in the first shot,  Sabal palmetto #2  regardless...

It's ugly, and i'd never do it to mine, if growing any, esp. Sabals.. but a common practice here.

For the most part, Washingtonia  here that are " scalped ' prior to Monsoon Season seem un-fazed and fill out again within a few months.

Obviously, the more appropriate approach would be to remove just any offending flower stalks and loose boots ( Washingtonia  at least ) but, most chop n' drop dudes aren't educated that way, or are directed by their ..also un-educated masters  to move through a job as quickly as possible.

I've heard the head guy who directs the chop n drop crew that trims the Mex Fans in the street island / landscaping across the street barking out orders to hurry up, from inside the house, numerous times when they're rolling through the neighborhood ..

A good demonstration for any current / future home owner / palm collector, ...who doesn't want to trim themselves,  to choose the person(s) that will take care of the trimming,   to choose wisely   ..Very wisely..

Sorry bout that lol I hate it as well I would rather see a bunch of dead fronds than this monstrosity.

You're good, no need for apologies..  and yes, it is sad that many landscape folks don't actually maintain things properly / take the  ...Chop up everything, as severely as possible,  outdated, cave man- esque approach to overall landscape maintenance.  I myself would pay a little extra more for someone who is far more careful and educated. That's just me though..

The only caveat in regards to palm trimming, In high traffic areas at least, is that seeds ( and resultant bird " deposits " of seed on cars, etc property / dropping fronds / boots can become a property / fire hazard.  The dudes that trim the Mex fans here often leave too many dead boots that end up flying all over during Monsoon season windstorms.. I've seen a number of near collisions when cars run into falling boots off the ones here.

I have noticed that some of my neighbors, located on the less busy streets behind me,  who'd had their palms trimmed in past years, skipped doing so this year ..aside from removing some looser boots.  A good start that i hope only continues to gain traction, ..at the very least,  in the immediate neighborhood.

@JacoPalmsCo

Here are some examples of what ..a majority,, of the Mex / CA. Fans look like after being trimmed, some of the Mex fans were down to just a couple fronds when butchered  Wayyy over trimmed obviously.. Not as full as they should be, but looking pretty good after 40-ish something days after they were scalped, most of that spent above 110F, w/ no rain..

Trimmed W. robusta

Trimmed filifera  ...or " Mutts " ..fatty trunks / frond color match, but, unless picked up from a reliable source,  you can never be certain on how pure they actually are  ..My thought on that only... The one mixed in w/ the robusta  next door is likely a mutt.

Untrimmed filifera ( and a friend or two, which have also suffered at the hands of over trimming in past years too ) ..with just a little boot-age hiding under the crowns ( Closer up shots ) ..by themselves,  and next to friends that were given a haircut, ..a little too much of a haircut, but not as bad as i've seen them trimmed in the past. If doing the trimming myself, aside from leaving more fronds, i'd have removed as many of the loose boots as possible also. Makes the palms look a bit ragged for the desired " look " they were going for.

I love the natural look of these palms when there's a gradient from green and new to brown and dried up at the bottom. I like the way the skirts look too.

It's a shame this practice is so common.

An abomination! There is a place in palm H#&& for the people who do this.

I'm growing my filiferas for the bird food ..!

On a side note.. last year and this spring while going through home depot.. I just happened to have filifera seeds in my pocket and was walking by the grass and cactus sections....

Not sure.. but....
