Sabal Minor advice....

Featured Replies

Is it okay to grow two or more sabal in the same container or pot? I guess one will eventually steal all nutriments and outgrow the other one!

Thanks PXL_20230901_220142247.thumb.jpg.0a8eb62c144ef34cb3b9da4d7d680874.jpgPXL_20230901_220056737.thumb.jpg.490ba315fbb9e5aa0e0446419e8524f8.jpg

They can stay doubles if you want them to look a little thicker.  Otherwise on the 1st one you had better be separating them now.

Most growers leave 2 or 3 to a pot. That's how I've seen 10' and 14" pots sold.

Most palms grow well that way. Even in ground. IF you want to seperate them I would do it as long as they are that small and roots aren't intertwined too much. Be careful! To my knowledge Sabals are root sensitive.

Well, that being said, I don't see an advantage in the groups unless you expect casualties. You could split them now and sell them for $10 each next year.

I cut off all my Sabal minor inflorescences this summer because of all the weed seedlings and actually some relatively large palms   that are popping up everywhere from previous years  . I hate to kill them so I may ,  over time , pot them and give them away , or sell them ?

One thing is for sure, they'll grow best in the ground.

I know Bananna Joe often pots 2 mimors together. I've done a few that way on the minors. I bought a 3 gallon pot at a Nursery in s. Car. And really didn't pay attention to the quality and it had 5 in it. These were actually good size. The next year I separated them and planted 2 singles buy the middle 3 was very intangled and didn't want to take a chance on damaging them so I planted the 3 together. 2 years later the are doing good.

One year I had 20 lbs or sabal minor seed that I decided to spread out in a 1-ft by 12-ft border. All the seed germinated in July and grew as thick as a lawn.  They've started producing fans now so the crowded conditions haven't phased them any. I've started digging up clumps this past few weekends as I can't have them growing any larger in the current bed. Got a couple that are now thigh high and definitely need to be moved. The whole bed is a solid thick mass of leaves.

I've personally seen 2/3 trachy bunch up together locally. I'm not a big fan of grouped trachy.  I my memory is right....those blue containers had 2 or 3 minors each!!

Alright then so I'll be keeping them together. If I were to pot them one by one, I would run out of containers very quickly 😏

Nice. They look healthy and good size, too.

My biggest volunteer . I need to cut the seed off of this one soon . There's a walking trail /park  near my house and I might spread seed around down near the creek .
