Anyone growing Dypsis Sp. Beff?

Featured Replies

Arguably one of the slowest growing  palms in my Southern California garden but well worth the wait. My double trunked Sp. Beff finally rewarded me with 2 big flowers this summer. Anyone else growing this interesting palm?

Beautiful! How old? I have one I planted fall of ‘22 and it opened a new frond that winter and is slowly producing another. Very healthy looking otherwise. It’s in full shade and I’m not sure if that’s good or bad for growth speed.

Slow AF for me. I've had one in the ground for some time (5 years?) from a 4" and it's splitting and starting to move a touch faster now.

A couple of photos of my Chrysalidocarpus sp. bef from this spring.  It started picking up the pace as it has formed it's first trunk.  I got this from you Josh, back in 2015 or 16 and planted it out from a tall one gallon.  Slow, but not my slowest by any means.

Wow you’re growing it quite fast considering how slow this species is. I didn’t realize you got that one for me Tracy. Looks phenomenal

I left mine out (a seedling) last winter in a cheap Amazon greenhouse and it just died. Disappointed I didn't keep it in the garage until it had some more size on it. That being said, I probably won't try it again. I have enough stuff still in pots that need to be planted.

If you try one again, get it in the ground in shade or partial shade in rich well draining soil. I planted a one gallon from Floribunda in fall of ‘22 and it opened a new frond about January and never had any setback.

Josh, I got this at the same time as the little Dypsis "Jurassic Park", which isn't so little any more either.  My recollection is that both of these are things you brought in from Jeff and Suchin at Floribunda.  Does that sound right?  It gets harder to remember the heritage on things as we get further away from the events, but I definitely remember at least the first step back to you correctly.  I'll have to try and get an updated photo to post since it has continued to grow over the summer.   It is in a race for sun with the adjacent horriwood mother.  It's a tight race thus far.

Yeah, it probably would have done better in the ground.

it was great to see yours looking great when I was there last week Josh.

As you saw Monday, my single trunker is flowering again. if only a single they are fast and big!

Taken this morning...

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

And then a 5 gallon paint bucket for trunk reference...

Also note seedlings from flower a couple years ago...

Really good question Josh. I  got it as a trade with @jdapalms I suspect 15+ years ago and it already was a nice single trunker.. maybe in a 25 gal pot? Maybe a 15, but don't think so. I do know when I  put it in the ground it was a missle!

As I've noted before, I  planted it where it is because I  thought my C. gigas would shade it out, HA! They're racing!!

Here a few pics of my Dypsis "Bef"  It's been in ground around 20+ years.  Its an OK palm but nothing to get excited about.

A mate has some older ones on a dry bank facing north. They look fantastic. I’ve two in too much shade but have just started to split into 2 trunks. Their arching leaves are nice. Definitely worth growing.
