he is a Screech owl.  A very small guy, no good for rats but maybe mice.  Mostly bug eaters if I remember right.

Whoa, great shot!  Look at that sharp little beak.  He might be small, but I bet he's tough.  I'm amazed he sat still for you long enough to get a photo.

Dear Alan  :)

beautiful still and a lovely bird...here in south india we have owls that are pure white in colour usually come to my garden and rest in our trees during the months of Dec & Jan every year and one could see them in our trees at around 2 A.M

but in that hour of darkness it gives an impression the place is haunted !  :D
