When to trim mule palm inflorescence?

We installed three field grown mules back in June and they finally seem to be getting established.  Our largest is growing two pods/spathes/inflorescence (not sure what the right term is before they bloom). See picture of one thats about 3 feet long. The other just emerged and is about a foot. 

 

Should these be pruned before they flower to direct more energy to frond production?  If so, at what point in their growth cycle should they be removed?

I would wait until it/they just start to open.

Had one open today. Any harm in trimming now?

I would go ahead and remove it. Should cause no harm.
