I dont believe anyone has a good sized specimen as this hybrid hasn't been around that long. 🤔 I can't mber the member that had all the Patric Hybrids as he doesn't post very often or at all anymore. I have 1 that is chugging along and has been in the ground for a year now from a band 3yrs ago. Pic is pretty current also it survived 17F this last winter minimal protection no spear pull.

Wow that’s impressive that it made it thru the 17 without spear pull, it does really seem to lean towards its butia heritage with the recurved leaves.

has it started growing faster since going in the ground ?

Nice to see one of that size.  I purchased a liner-sized one from Patrix a little over a year ago.  Strange plant.  Seemed happy but never threw a single spear the entire time and fell victim to the terrible AZ heat this summer even though it was in the shade.  All my other hybrids from him have done amazing and by the parentage you’d assume it would thrive.  Maybe it was “challenged” from the get go.

This definitely can be the case as this one is the only band sized palm I have been able to keep alive as far as Patric palms. Fortunately all the larger palms I have gotten from him I haven't lost

Im growing this one in Harlingen, TX.  It’s about 3.5’ tall currently.  It keeps going chlorotic - but growing ok otherwise.

@Ben in Norcal has to have one of these in a decent size I would imagine. He has all the cool Patric hybrids that we love and even the ones we don't know about.

I would think based on the parentage the Butia x monty should look more like a mule palm than a pure Butia.  As a side note I have two monty/coco queens and they are not as cold hardy as many claim.  Mine are damaged in the upper 20s and last winter defoliated at 25.  After a winter with a smelly stinky crown there is full recovery with h2o2 treatment.  Recovery for the Butia x monty from 17 degrees is pretty amazing with only one third Butia genes (or would that be 50% Butia genes?).   Are there any F2 "montys" around?  Do they produce viable seeds/pollen?

50% butia genes, I’m not sure if they produce pollen

I had 2 pretty decent sized Cocoqueens which survived 24° with freezing rain no harm. Next year 19° freezing rain no protection burnt to a crisp. Defiright on par with a normal queen maybe a lil less hardy. I still miss these palms wishing I would've protected , Palmageddon 2 yrs later, no chance.

Those are beautiful palms

I’m hoping the butia xmonty will favor the coco queens in looks with the added cold hardiness

Sailed thru it , freezing rain @24° no spear pull. All my other hybrids had varying degrees of spear pull or bud rot. Definitely favoring it's Butia genes for sure. It better not turn out to be pure Butia =/ Here is its most current pic.

It does seem to be very recurved, hopefully it’s not just a Butia.

mine are still strap leaves but one is showing windows on its most recent spear

Hybrids can be all over in form.  I had (2) yatay mules from patric, one was rigid leaf upright the other somewhat weeping like a queen.  I had (4) Jubutiagrus, forms of the palms were all over the place.  There are also two extremes of mules from the same source, rigid and weeping.  In annual crops they don't have that genetic variability as they refined it over many years.  F1 breeding ends us with variation.

@OC2Texaspalmlvr that looks to be really nice baby you’ve got there!

And, you’ve left room in case the trunk gets fat like the other Buteagrus.

How about a new picture?

IMG_2507.thumb.jpeg.96933725957c4451590e12351a18dd5e.jpegHere is an updated picture of one of mine. This one is thought to be a miss, more butia than anything? Nice looking plam nonetheless. It’s currently flowering. I have two more in the ground a bit smaller and look a bit different, time will tell.

@Gallop you have a wonderful Patric collection ! @DoomsDave i will get one today if I remember haha It has grown a bunch this growing season like my other Patric hybrids. It definitely leans on the butia side but has that hybrid vigor out pacing my pure Butia. Pic was from August 26th so a 3 month update = )
