Planning a vacation to the Florida Keys.  Initial thought is to plan a “home base” on Marathon and drive from there to other destinations.  Not looking for nightlife, just amazing palm , bird, and wildlife experiences.  Can anyone offer any suggestions for highlights to visit?

We went to Crane Point Hammock right there in Marathon last time we were there. Its a pretty neat place with a walking trail and some historical buildings. Lots of palms and other plants and trees on the trail. Not sure if you are driving in but there are several places in South Florida that would be great stops as well. The Fairchild, Pinecrest Gardens and others.

Big Pine Key, see the Pines and Coccothrinax argentata before higher sea levels destroys the existing landscape completely.

The Blue Hole,  a rare freshwater pond with an naturally isolated population of alligators. See:

Bahia Honda for the scalding hot water and soft sand...You can swim next to three native palms (Coccothrinax argentata, Leucothrinax morissi, and Thrinax radiata) and towering (tall type? Jamaican Tall?) coconuts
