Bismarck frond age

Featured Replies

I have resisted the urge to cut fronds till full dead. That said, I could trim a few. How long does a frond live? I expect these to be 2+yrs. I’m tempted to tape the new spear and see how long from birth to death. I can’t seem to find anything online or in this forum.

Not only would marking it be a good way to keep track of its lifetime, but also just to monitor growth too. I put a ziptie loosely around a frond on my young Queen probably two to three years ago, and the palm put on a good bit of upward growth. Unfortunately December 2022 came in a defoliated it so I was never able to really see how long they lasted. This palm only killed off a frond or two per year and put out many more than that. To say that it had a full crown would be an understatement.

I dont know how long Bizzy fronds last as smaller palms seem to kill off fronds more rapidly than larger palms (my Bizzy is just now producing adult fronds). Would be a interesting way to monitor growth and see how long fronds last. Make sure to only tag it after the frond has fully opened though.

2 years is a good guess on Bizzies.  I still have some fronds on my backyard one that were tattered in last summer's hurricanes.  They were fairly new last summer and are now at about a 45 degree angle upwards.  Roughly speaking I think they'll be horizontal around the end of the fall growing season.  I will slice them off before they start tilting downwards, but only because they'll slow-motion-crush other nearby plants.

We would trim Bizzy fronds when they drooped down to head height. We decided to do that after a Bizzy leaf slapped me upside the face and gave me a bloody lip. There’s a limit as to how abuse I’ll take from a palm.

Mine are dropping big time. Blocking out sun to undergrowth and becoming more green than silver. That said, I try to not trim until dead dead. Based on what I have cut off and the time it has been planted, I think maybe 3-4 fronds in 3-4 yrs and have put out 2x as much in the same time.

My bismarckia puts out a dozen or more new leaves a year and drops that many self shedding.  They grow faster in sun and yours looks shaded some so probably less.  I would cut off a leaf that is mostly brown at least 3/4ths if the palm is healthy.  One thing is that cutting green material lets out a smell that may attract palmetto weevils if they are nearby and its the right time of year.   they breed late spring to summer about 3 months so avoid cutting at that time when they are looking for a place to breed.  No problem if the weevils dont like the palm but they do like bismarckias a lot.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Mine only have early morning shade. Full sun from mid morning to about 45min before sundown. The one in the pic is 95ft from the eave of the house and due east. I currently have 5 spears unopened. It is shading the grass enough that it is thin but the lowers are making it a pain in the a** to mow under. I cut when dead and can dang near pull it off but wondering how much longer they have? A couple have had browning tips for near a year.

I hate to take off a few prematurely but my patience is running low. After this bottom row I should be clear for a good bit.

this sucker has spent the last 3-4yrs getting fat and full. About as fat as any I have ever seen. Now have 4ft of real trunk and girthy.
