I have 4 small Kerriodoxa in pots in my nursery area, they did great at about 27-29F last winter.  I bought them a bit over a year ago from Floribunda and hope to make a little colony of my own some day!  In the meantime I bought this 3 gallon from MB Palms at last spring's Leu Gardens sale and recently planted it under a Beccariophoenix Alfredii in the front yard.  I did the same thing with another one back in 2020 but under an Alfredii in the back yard.  That one took minimal damage from a January 2022 freeze around 25F, but caught a bud rot and I didn't notice in time to treat it.  :(

It is a bit tough to gage the size but looks to be pretty trunk at this time.   How long in the ground from what size?  Has performed fine here for me, just a moderately slow grow.

I can't recall what genus this is now.  It was moved to Allagoptera caudescens,  but I recall hearing another move to Syagrus.   I never read anything to confirm the last name change so am not certain it is accurate.

I wouldn’t think they changed it to Syagrus  because the reason they moved it to Allegoptera is because of the inflorescence!!

Here’s another one I have in my garden no trunk yet but the age of the palm wound have to be around 18 years after planting it we had really good rain for a couple of years then Australia went into drought for around 12 years wich give Australia the really bad bush fires along the east coast it was like living in a box of matches any day a fire could have come then we had the rains again just recently wich broke many a record for rainfall in my area I like the new spear pattern I still have a few in pots a slow growing palm in my area IMG_1471.thumb.jpeg.e6cadc8ed3f08beac7c38fb95844f7b4.jpeg

Great palm more should be planted, low maintenance palm, plant and forget really. My experience seems to be much as yours, but I have noticed in the last couple of years it's growth as accelerated probable due to all the rain we have been getting. I am guessing but 25 years old from seedling. You want to be young when you plant it at that age!

I have one really nice Bactris  gasiapaes the trunk has needle like spines the day the mother in law grabbed it for stability I was not very popular but I had warned her prior as for other palms I have iam up to 167 in my collection and still growing strong the best thing about getting older is our palms look better every day I was really lucky in the last 3 years I started my palm nursery up again except now this time with rare and exotic varieties 23 years ago the varieties of palms we had was not much in my area plus no internet now the world is supplying so many new varieties

Here is a sample of some of my collection I hope to plant in the ground one day in paradise in the garden there are so many different varieties of palms I only remember there names when I see them my climate is subtropical but a unique microclimate with black sandy soil and sandstone rock gives me an advantage in winter with thermal protection and the advantage of the sand heats up better in winter than other types of soil with temperatures as low as 2 degrees with -2 in some areas were I live with summer temperatures reaching 43 degrees and the waterfall photo was taken in a town called Dorrigo in my area

This species is an absolutely beauty, they are amazing in habitat in Thailand. I’ll really have to give growing one in Melbourne a try given the positive reviews in some cool climates.

Mine had no problems with repeated dips to 28-30F (-2C or so) under canopy.  It only caught a bud/crown rot after a dip to 25F (-4C).  I didn't notice that they had a problem growing in cool weather.  I'd say go for it!

Great collection, I noticed a label the Jade vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) have you had any success with it? I tried and failed.  Almost all my palms were bought as seedlings and came from Brisbane or Cairns area. Not much locally unfortunately. Do you ever sell palms at Bellingen markets? or any markets in the area.

Greeting palm nut the jade vine this is the first winter here with it in the hot house I have both the green and yellow growing well even with new growth in winter and yes there is not much in the way of local growers of quality rare palms so iam hoping to fill that gap with a ten year plan and yes I wish to do the local markets when my stock is ready I have supplied a few local nurseries but they really don’t want to give what they are really worth so markets for me my email is happypalmshalfwaycrk@gmail.com if you’re in my area iam sure the conversation will be palms cheers

Yes the Joey will grow in the ground but you have to be a gardener to push for the extra growth in summer and water anytime you can plus mulch and feed I find they like a warm position with some sun dappled light position the combination can be tricky but if you know you’re garden you can find a spot I have that many iam just going to put as many in as I can and see what Mother Nature provides ( should have planted a thousand 20 years ago) I get excellent hothouse growth once again water water water I imported 2000 seeds a around 18 months ago and had a great germination rate there easy to germinate bottom heating at 30 degrees there’s a a few even still coming up they will definitely grow in pots for you I have seen them in Sydney in the ground cheers

You sure have a green thumb!! Welcome from up in Brissie.

Regards Neil

Wow, looks like a great collection! Also very healthy! You need to put a list on here of what you have growing! your climate sound similar to mine in Spain but I imagine we have less rain 😅
