Chamaedorea Radicalis seedlings

Featured Replies

Hey y’all

Earlier this spring DoomsDave was nice enough to send a million radicalis seeds, some were germinated in pots while other were sown into the garden before I applied mulch for the season.

Now that it’s been a few months I don’t exactly remember where they all are, but a good number of them are sprouting up. But I’m wondering if you can tell if they’re going to be a trunking vs non-trunking variety right from the first leaf.

it appears some of them sprout up and shoot out one large leaf  while others shoot out a forked leaf IMG_5426.thumb.jpeg.eec64e78942492a96cd370c1ee0d0fa3.jpegIMG_5425.thumb.jpeg.0e8d23ad6afedb8752b7a830ac23d9f3.jpeg

The plant in the 2nd photos is not a Cham radicalis. Cham rad first leaves are always bifid, i.e., forked. That’s the problem with tossing seeds directly on the ground vs growing up in pots first - aside from varmint predation. As for trunking vs non-trunking, you cannot tell what a seedling will become when it is a tiny seedling. Give it time to reveal itself.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

DoomsDave told me they would probably all be trunking.

I have these popping up all over from the adults that I planted years ago. They all end up trunking but it takes a couple of years. I don't have any that are trunkless. I started about 20 years ago with just a few and now I have them spread out , under the other palms. They are great palms and handle cold as well as sun . Harry

That’s cool, that’s what I was hoping for!
