Every so often here in St. Pete a scent wafts through the air. To me, it smells like cold McDonald's french fries. I know I'm strange.  :P

It was heavy at my work 7 miles away and is still in the air here at home.

I'm guessing it is some weed, palm or plant that is blooming. Am I crazy or has anyone else ever smelled this & know what it could be?  ???

Matty,

There is a McDonald's near everyone. I guess it may be a local thing.

Well most ghost smells we blame on the dogs but in this case, it seemed to be the whole county  :D  :D  :D  :D

fastfeat,

Ah yeah I was stationed at Macdill for 8 yrs not too long ago so I can't blame it on that .. :P didn't hear about a biofuel plant near here either so I am still perplexed! The smell is distant now but between 4-7 pm it was THERE.

The flowers of the Melaleuca (Paperbark) tree- Melaleuca quinquenervia, and others in the genus have a very strong boiled potato smell.  They are blooming here on the East coast now.

Not the leaves-they smell a little like Camphor when crushed.

Don't suppose carob trees grow in Florida but the scent you describe reminds of the funky/musky smell of their "flushing" inflorescences [some compare it to Limburger cheese   .   There's a giant carob next to my place that fills the air when the pods open

That's one stench I don't miss from CA, though our garbage dumps come close!

Hi Bren,

It's definitely paperbark (aka punk trees). I have a bunch of them in my backyard and also found out I'm allergic to them.

I'm just glad I wasn't losing my mind. The smell is back tonight and I did walk out to the alley and pin pointed the culprit 40' outside my back door. In my opinion, another valid reason to get rid of them. Blech.

I'm allergic to them as well, likely why I am so sensitive to their odor. Dave if this smell makes you hungry, I have to ask..are you Irish?  :P

I think some legume trees produce a scent. I always smell soething at night in summer in SoFL, maybe from Delonix or Bauhinia. I smell it around here at times. Today I trimmed some Bauhinia and caught the smell.
