Windmill Palm in pot in shock?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone, I have been looking at the forum for a while now and just joined.  I live in zone 7B in NC. I recently bought my first windmill palm and fan palm. My windmill is in a pot and I’m getting concerned about some spots and overall look of the palm. It was in a 3 gallon container when I bought it. I used well draining soil and added permatill. These are my first two palms. My fan palm seems to be doing great while my windmill is getting some yellow and brown spots as you can see in pictures.  I am following the water schedule the nursery gave me.  I also noticed a massive ant population and tiny red bugs that look very similar to clover mites which I have never had before in any of my potted plants. Again, I am new to planting palms so any advice/opinions on the health would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I also added a photo of the palm in a container when I first bought it for comparison.

I cannot see the problems in the photos.

I suggest you move the plant away from the house and flood the soil to see if ants float out of the soil. Try spraying the palm with Neem Oil. That should suffocate any mites on the leaves.
