Oh and Coreopsis.. I'm not sure if they would be evergreen in 8a but they are in 9a. Very easy to grow from seed either C. grandiflora or C. lancelota, I am sure there are others that would be evergreen and capable of sun, but those are two I have used and seed is cheap + easy. They could be used to fill the spot as you acquire more plants. I find the foliage stays nice and clean and is a darker green than many other perennial flowers.

There is also members of Iris family e.g. blue eyed grass and many of the shorter Irises but idk how theyd handle the site, I have a high water table beneath my sandy loam so they might be getting boosted by that

I've been searching for a ground cover that I can use in my garden bed. I've been removing grass from my garden bed, but I'm having trouble finding a suitable ground cover with a tropical appearance that would thrive in a full sun in 8A and come back after winter or if its evergreen, it doesn't have to be tropical-looking; something similar to the appearance of creeping jenny would be nice but I'm unsure if it works in full sun and I don't really want a golden/yellow ground cover. I would appreciate any recommendations for a reliable that would work for me 🤠👍

Of course I'm a long way from North Carolina...but I'm starting to try creeping herbs.  So far I have tried in 3 spots...Fairy Tyme, some kind of mint, and oregano.  Only been a fe weeks so can't report much.

Ive been thinking about tyme as it lays as close to the ground as I'd want, I didn't consider mint or oregano but I just googled and they look pretty cool too! I'm assuming they grow year around for you?

Well yea they sure do over here.  Just saw the fairy time and it looked bad.  Not sure if the wife doing a good job watering or the sun just to hot.
