Chamaerops humilis single trunk?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I was driving home from the airport and noticed what I thought at first was a crazy looking Trachycarpus. After stopping I saw the teeth and realized it was Chamaerops humilis. I just don’t recall ever seeing a single trunk form like this. There were no signs of suckering around the base and it just threw me off. Is this normal? Thanks

Yes, there is a single trunk form of Chamaerops. It’s much less common but not rare. Here’s one my crew was moving a few years ago on a Los Altos, CA project. IMG_8216.jpeg.399601de9be6a296e9c61b516c4340be.jpeg

Yep, I bought a couple of "clearance" trunking Chamaerops from the big orange store.  These were at least 2-4' of trunk each, and one of them is solitary and shows no signs of offsets.  The others all have a variety of random sliciness offsetting from the bottom.

Is the solitary habit just luck of the draw, or will the offspring produce true to the parent? I have one in my garden that has about five or six trunks and I regret it a desade later because it takes up so much real estate. I really like that single trunk form and shall be back to harvest seed, just reminds me of a more robust Trachy.

Not to be confused with this.

Here's one I grew from seed. It's just luck to get one that doesn't produce offsets. Others from the same parent tree did produce offsets.🤷‍♂️

This one is generally male, although it HAS produced viable seed on 2 different occasions over the last 20 years.

Unfortunately the solitary habit is not common for the sp but also not an anomaly.

This was Lake Mary, but at least 2 years ago.  I figured $50 each was a good deal, since they were probably 10-20 years old each...  :D
