PSSC meeting and SoCal PRAs

Recommended Posts

My wife and I spent a few days down in San Diego to attend the PSSC meeting, see palms, and just hang out.  While I was checking out the gardens and socializing, my wife (the real photographer in the family) snapped pictures (not necessarily of palms).

I love these.  They look like rows of little birds.

Saturday was finished off at the Sushi bar with Paul and MattyB.

On Sunday Paul hauled us over to the Catamaran for an afternoon of PRA.

Sabal (mauritiiformis?), forgot the ID on this one.

Nice pics Robert.  Those Ravenea rivularis at the catamaran always look like that.  It's not freeze damage it's from not enough water.  Although they're in a lawn area that's maintained they probably never get a deep watering during the warm months.  It was nice to meet you and have sushi that night.

I regret not getting food pics to make this an official PRA thread but, oh well Sushi and lunch Sunday at that Asian place were great anyway.  Sylvia was surprised that the macro shots even came out since it was breezy and she didn't bring a tripod (not that it would have made a difference when the subject moves).

Thanks for the cause on the ratty looking R. rivularis Matt.

Will post the rest of the Catamaran tonight.

Kyle,  I didn't pay much attention at the time, but it seems like it was ~5' to the growth point, so I would guess 15'+ to the tip of the tallest frond.

Yeah, I agree Kyle, that Raphia is a show stopper.  It's so orange and big.

Monday it was off for the obligitory Balboa Park visit.  No matter what, I always have to visit when in SD.  With all the recent BP threads, it is hard to find some unique pictures, but here goes...

Tuesday we headed back north making a stop at Nickel Palm Nursery in Shafter, CA (near Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley) to buy some more palms and snap pictures of the nearby Bismarkias that pretty much just laughed at the freeze this year.  These guys reportedly got down to at least 18F based on the temps measured at the nursery >1 mile away.
