Recovery from Christmas

Slowly, but surely they are recovering.

I'm just happy they survived. The Sabal blackburniana was unprotected (aside from a very thin layer of frost cloth to keep water out), while the Butia and Chamaerops were trunk wrapped with heat cable and frost cloth.

Near total defoliation of the Chamaerops, ~50% burn on the butia, and >95% defoliation of the sabal.

I do not recall a winter in my lifetime where things like Pansys, Violas, and cabbages died. This was truly astonishing.

What was even more interesting is that all of the "tropicals/subtropicals" (i.e., Gingers, prayer plants, and BOPs) survived while so many of the maples, azaleas, hollys, etc died completely.

Not much to look at right now, but hopefully in October things will shape up.

Damn the Blackburniana took a hit! I have a small maybe 1 gallon in the ground that survived here with just a bucket over it. We went -4f. How cold did you get there? I’m glad all those palms survived at your house!

My S. blackburniana looks just like this one at the 10.6F we hit, but it's coming back with a vengeance.  Glad yours made it as well!

@teddytn The ultimate low in my yard during the 80+ hrs below freezing was 10.2F.

@Sabal King Sounds about right. We were right there in the same temp range. So far its pushed out the damaged frond from the cold, and 1 other one thats huge with a good sturdy spear.

Same schedule actually, yea.  Looks like this one will do just fine.  Glad it lived for ya!

I am glad to report that all of the palms have recovered well this growing season and don't even appear to have ever been defoliated!

This was quite the relief.

Wow awesome recovery! and nice to have things like those bananas so fast to spring up out of nowhere and make it look like the place has been tropical forever.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

@Xerarch That is the first year I've had bananas die to the ground in a long time. Typically they have 4-6ft of surviving pseudostem each year, and just need to be cleaned up come late February - mid march. In December the stems collapsed and it was a nasty mess to clean up.

All my palms that I have planted before the December freeze ( Robusta , Syagrus Rom. , Filibusta,  Phoenix Roebelenii surivived but were completely defoliated except my Filibusta that took minor damage. The lowest temperature in my area were 16,21,24,28 Fahrenheit.  Light protection only .  After the freeze I decided to dig out my Phoenix Roebelenii I didn't want to push my luck any further for the future.  Next year I will also dig out my Queen palm since the recovery took too long it just looks nice now. Will be replaced by a more cold hardier Mule but long story short here are the survivors that were completely defoliated.
