Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I had this on the mental list to do. So this morning I went out to weed and take some pics. I had also been thinking about replanting it as it had grown to one side. Took it from where it sets, placed it up on a 2x4 ledge above to weed it.  Weeded it and it was looking decent. I stepped to get my camera and "PLOP" it tumbled off the ledge about 30" to hit some empty pots below. :(

I guess the universe was saying "The time is now!"  .. like I had a choice.

Well, at least I got to see the roots.. less than I would like, but they looked healthy... so freshly  repotted.. here you go!

Plant that sucker!!! It looks super healthy. amazing size difference example on whats out there . I would imagine my tahina and yours are same seed batch? Only difference is yours is in a pot? 

and the difference between these 2 and others from the same batch outside of California is crazy .

The first part... truely spoken like someone where the temperature reaches over 80F MANY days a year. 😀

 

That bit I think is true.

 

The last bit has taken me many years to realize that one of the biggest factors in decent growth rate for most palms is heat. At my coastal location,  I  have very little here to spare. I have killed, or watched people in similar locations kill, many small slow growers by planting early. 

The new cal palms don't really seem to grow much faster with heat, thus I have a lot of those..

 

But still not for sale.. 😉

Been seeing some cold night this week and looks to be seeing a few more this coming week . So far I’m happy with how it’s taking the cold weather it does get ample sun and whatever heat possible during the day .

You're brave.  I would probably put a frost blanket over it.

I may do that tonight and tomorrow . 39 tonight and 37 tomorrow . 37 is the coldest I’ve ever been here in the last 7 years since I have been here . Any recommendations on way to cover it with ? A sheet ? Or would just putting the shade cloth back up help?

My method is not too fancy.  I would just put the shade cloth or the sheet right on top of it - trying not to squish it too much

What many of us learned from our big cold event in So Cal ( geez, was that 15+ years ago?), was to try to not have your sheet or blanket  TOUCHING the  leaf/ palm. I and and know others were shocked when we saw that parts that had covered the  frond via touching it were burnt, yet exposed parts of the same frond were fine.

Conductive exposure?

Thank you Bill, I did not know about that.  I have always just put Agribon frost blankets right on top -- and I have gotten some burnt leaves.

So I didn’t bother covering it . Actually ended up with a nasty cold the last few days . But came out to check it out now that we are getting back up to overnight lows in the high 40s and low 50s with some rain on the way . And it looks great . Definetly seems fairly hardy . Seen as low as 37

37 is the coldest? What part of riverside do you live in? It's bee frosty there in the county a couple times this year.

Yep that’s the coldest . I have maybe had one or 2 light frost here in the last 7 years since I’ve been here . I’m slightly elevated on a hill .old citrus avocado grove  Above mockingbird canyon not sure if your familiar with the area . Woodcrest . 
great air drainage maybe . Just down the hill from me couple miles away they get more frost then me .

For instance I know a couple growers close to me in riverside and I’m warmer than them . Definetly not like Moreno Valley which is a stones throw away .

Not sure i would try one here at the moment but that little one looking that good after 37 is promising! I did hit 32 briefly here last week. Bananas didn't even burn from it.

Yes probably about 15 miles. I'm in Moreno Valley.
