Take the virtual road trip (see mostly historic photos at many Keys) and then check out the Photo Search album for more than 900 mostly historic photos of the Florida Keys.

I noticed my old navy ship, Howard W. Gilmore AS-16, that I was stationed on at Key West is in the album as well as many more. That was some good duty there in Key West. Too bad I didn't appreciate it more at the time.

Website has short "intro" before menu comes up.

Walt, Thank you for your informative post. Mile Markers are truly helpful in the Florida Key's.

You're welcome, Bubba. I stumbled across Mile Markers and figured I'd share it here for those interested.

Thanks for posting, Walt.  I will be in Miami from Dec. 8-11, and just before I read this thread I decided it might be worth my time to drive at least partway through the keys while I'm there.  I imagine even the drive would be quite scenic.

Its funny, just last week I stumbled across some other historic information/pictures about the keys, pertaining to Stiltsville.

Anyone potentially interested in joining me for a drive to the keys on 12/8 or 12/9?  Or going to Fairchild one of those days?

You're welcome. I drove the Keys many times in 1970/71, and then again in June of 1985 (the last time), and I found them to be very scenic.

However, I happen to know many folks in my area (Lake Placid, Florida) that moved up here from the Keys (after decades of living there) due to overcrowding, high cost of living, hurricanes, etc. Of course, the above statements can be said of virtually any area of the US now (except of hurricanes).

It's a nice drive if they're done with the construction.  Start at the crack of dawn if your starting from Miami.  Haul ass on the bridge portions.  Do the speed limit everywhere else - the islands themselves are crawling with the boys in blue.  Go all the way to Key West with enough time at least for several hours there.  It wouldn't seem worth it to make the effort otherwise.

Definitely make it to Fairchild, and while you are in the area don't miss "The Kampong" also.  I spent an entire day taking them both in a few months ago.  Outstanding to say the least.
