What do I do with these yellow leaves?

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

This is my Majesty Palm, went yellow quickly indoors:

What do I do with yellow leaves on this palm and also on other palms?

Planted palms: Sabal minor, W. Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm, my favourite!), Windmill, Pindo, Needle, European Fan, Sago palm, Saw Palmetto, Pygmy Date palm

Inside during winter: Majesty, Cat palm, Chinese fan palm, Mexican Fan palm

Personally I would wait until the leaves turn all the way brown or yellow then trim them. I think the combination of dry air from climate controlled environments and lesser to no sunlight indoors greatly diminish these trees.

Favorite palms: Pindo/Jubaea/Mule variants, Large Sabals Climate: High humidity subtropical Lowest seen: 16F throughout the day Soil type: Heavy red southeastern clay

The humidity inside was 40-50%, I don't understand why Majesties hate it inside my house :(

Maybe low light, but can it go from absolutely healthy to looking like this just because of 2 weeks of low light? I don't think so...

It could be other factors as well but the only way to know for sure would be to ph test and NPK test your potting mix. But most people would probably just repot it with good soil and wait.

I don't think there's soil/NPK issue as it was looking healthy inside HomeDepot?

And quickly after I got it, it started yellowing.

As mentioned ..100's of times here, Majesty palms are one of the worst indoor plant subjects..  HD or Lowes constantly rotate the plants on their shelves.. so the average Joe thinks their plants always look perfect..

A lot of their indoor plants are greenhouse grown as well and can suffer once out in the real world ( AKA: the harsher conditions of the average home )  This could be part of the reason you're suddenly seeing lots of yellowing foliage.. Greenhouses also get a lot more light, which Majesty Palms need lots of to stay healthy.

While some people have somehow mastered growing them in containers / indoors -at least part of the year, i wouldn't waste my money..

Chamaedorea, many sp. anyway,  and Howea ( Kentia ) are far better palm choices for indoor culture.

I think you're probably right that Majesties are just not created to live well indoors.

I have the same problem with  Chamaedorea cataractarum (Cat palm) though.

But the Chinese Fan Palm ( Livistona chinensis, another popular palm from HomeDepot) is feeling well inside.
