How do I know when I can take my potted palms outside or should take them inside?

Let's say it's a zone 9a palm and it's 45F at night on average now, but the lowest will be 38F for a very short period of time. Is it ok to put it outside?

Planted palms: Sabal minor, W. Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm, my favourite!), Windmill, Pindo, Needle, European Fan, Sago palm, Saw Palmetto, Pygmy Date palm

Inside during winter: Majesty, Cat palm, Chinese fan palm, Mexican Fan palm

I.e. how do I translate zone number into minimum or average night temperature for potted palms?

Check out the ‘palms in pots’ forum. There’s at least one main topic from last year specifically about this

That would depend on the variety. Some won't tolerate temps below 40F. I've got Pindos that have sat on the porch covered with snow and temps down to 25F. Below freezing though, I'll wrap a blanket around the pot for a 1 or 2 day mid 20's type of freeze.  Frost also can affect different palms with results ranging from severe to no damage.
