A new discovery about licuala kalimantan mottled seed germination

Featured Replies

I received the seeds from rps last October and have been putting them in the moss to promote germination. Only three had sprouted as of yesterday. Yesterday I accidentally noticed that the seemingly hard seed coat of this plant was very thin, so I broke the outer shell of three seeds to expose their bud points, and today I found that their bud points are all bulging.

In fact, it germinated faster than I thought it would. This afternoon I popped the remaining three and found two of them showing signs of germination in the evening.

Very nice!  There are a few other palm species that have a similar thin outer shell as well.  Pseudophoenix sargentii, several Livistona including saribus and alfredii and like you discovered some Licuala also.  Those are ones that come to mind but I'm certain that there are others.

I'll update later today and check to see if there's any mildew.

It’s been a while, but just in case you read this I have a question.

Did you find that it helped germination to take off the outer seed coat?
