I everyone, do you shave your windmills?

Posted

You mean stripping the trunk?

Yeah, just an idea.

I don't.  You can, there are arguments against it but if you start it is pretty hard to do and you will have to redo it every time the palm grows a couple feet to make it look right.  So think - on a ladder with a razer knife leaning on a trunk as it grows.

I don’t have any windmills but I think it does give them a unique look, especially if you live somewhere where you can’t grow a big variety it makes them look different, same with med fan palm, I’ve seen them them shaved trunks too, but yeah I agree with above comment, that would be a lot of work.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

I have six Trachycarpus, and no, too much work for me.  I do like the look, however.

I haven't yet but I'm thinking about doing it some day. Just for the experience. It never gets so cold that I'm worried about the cold hardiness and I have many of them so why not try it on one tree. They are also often sold here stripped in Europe.

If you're thinking about it. This guy is giving very good information and instructions:

Oh, I don't have one yet, will be getting a few next week. I wanted to make sure that we didn't have any more cold days because they're going straight in the ground. What size should they be before I start? Thanks for the advice, I was a little nervous about when to start.

Oh wow, thanks for that. I was thinking about a few feet.

I did one of mine many years back. A lot of work. Sabals and Washies are easier.

I did mine well over a year ago when we were in lockdown. It is a Lot of work but i think they do look better shaved, there's some cool looking details in the trunk.

However,  It will be a hassle when it gets too tall to comfortably get up a ladder and trim it. I need to get back up my one  again to trim it.😐
