Howdyall:

I have [oedipal obscene gerund] Vinca major [expletive expletive expletive] in some of my palms, etc.

Roundup (glyphosate) works, but it whacks palms that get a dose.  Some, like Dypsis baronii, are quite sensitive.  (How do you THINK I know?  ??? )

I schlepped to Big Orange in the Big Orgy and got some "Bayer Advanced Power Force Brush Killer Plus" Which contains tricopyr.

I note that the directions indicate that it's much more effective at killing dicots, like Vinca than monocots, such as grasses.  No specific advice as to palms.

I'm NOT going to shoot my palms head to toe with the stuff, but I'd sure appreciate any experiences, cautionary tales etc.

Thank you all!

dave

Dave,

In Florida we use Tricoplyr (Garlon 4, Rodeo) mixed 10-25% in biodiesel as a basal teatment for control of exotic species such as Brazilian pepper, Melaleauca and Chinese tallow in natural areas. A small amount sprayed on the base of the trunk will kill these dicots with minimal resprouts. Generally control can be limited to the target plant but any overspray does usually impact whatever it hits. I've seen Seranoa with damage but usually not fatal to the stem, still not something you want to see in your collection. I believe the label refers to grasses as such, they will brown but spread back into the controlled area. I don't think a minimal amount of mix on dried areas such as leaf bases would effect the palm but I would be very careful. If you can "wick" some chemical directly on the baddie (I am not familar with the plant) it might be workable but a test is probably in order. Be careful, you will not see the damage for 2-3 weeks.

I use a brush killer from Southern AG with tricoplyr in it. I have used in in the general location of palms, but I have killed Lugustrum, Vibernum, Carrotwood, Schefflera, and other badly placed border plants around my house. It is fairly nasty stuff, I would assume it would do damage to any palm part it touched.

Thank you Christian.

Gonna do my diabolical experiments and keep everyone posted.

Test it on the over-abundant washie seedlings that plague my place.
