Length of Recovery from Spear Pull

Recommended Posts

I have a windmill palm who got spear pull from fungal infection for whatever reason, so I sprayed it with copper fungicide twice and monoxide, and my question is , how long exactly do they take to recover? Thanks!

A pic and when did you notice the pull?  Easiest is a small stick down the cavity every week or 2 to check if it is moving.  My large ones just started moving here 1-3" per week will speed up as temps/sun increases.

I had one spear pull last April. Only took about a month to fully push a new spear. By June it was growing like nothing happened to it. Keep it dry and when it starts warming up it should come back.

Depends on the size of the plant. How severe the spear pull is and of course the weather conditions. It might recover very quickly in a couple of months but I wouldn't give up when it takes a bit longer. If the tissue is very badly damaged or rotten it can take a while for a palm to push out new growth. Just try to keep it dry and to sanitise the hole every once in a while.

I have a princeps that spear pulled on me, and it didn't push anything new out for almost 2 years. The leaves remaining leaves stayed green, but I thought it was done. I checked on it the other day and it's finally pushing a new leaf out, after all this time. It's pretty amazing.

Three bad winter hits in a row. Unprecedented. Closest is fried (may recover) & the furthest (10' away) seems largely fine. Go figure.

Is there anything you plan to do help the recovery of the "closest" one in you picture?

I have similar issue with mine

I will recover / reclaim that spot and plant another one or something different. I have never in 40 years of exotic gardening seen this kind of winter damage. In '08 / '09 it was bad and saw about 30% frond damage. That was just one year, not 3 consecutive.

I see growth coming out of the center of the hole in April . You can measure down into the hole with a stick or something and see if the hole is getting more shallow over time . I remember being distraught when my young Trachys' spears pulled out only to be elated when I saw growth coming out in April .
