These pics are from our visit to Royal Botanic Gardens Kew near London on 21st August this year. I was not sure weather to post this in travel logs or not but seeing as it is mostly palms, here it is.

The Palm House at Kew Gardens was constructed in 1844-48 using technology borrowed from    shipbuilding and the design is essentially an upturned hull. However it has had some major refits in the 1950’s and 1980’s. It was difficult to get far enough distance from it to capture the whole structure on one still.

Amazing pictures from an amazing place.  I've been to the UK 4 times and have never been to Kew.  My loss.

Are the palms there growing in pots or in the ground?

Most of them are in large beds. Heated of course.

They used to be kept in pots until some time in 1980's.

Now leaving the Palm House.

The Waterlily House is next to the Palm House and is the warmest, most humid of the indoor areas at Kew. Inside also was the famous Victoria cruziana, Nymphaea, Nelumbo water lilies and pitcher plants, chilli plants, bananas and orchids.

Jim, I hate to think what you would have felt had you come here in May, June,July which were atrocious, August was by far our best summer month, even though it was distinctly average !

Anyway glad you enjoyed your visit despite out climate.

I'm afraid the coconut was removed last year due to the danger of it breaking through the glass.

It has been replaced by a smaller specimen in a better position to allow more potential growth.

That evening we went to see the Rolling Stones at the O2 Stadium. This pic was when the stage travelled forward and was one of the few nearly clear pics that I shot as there was constant flashing lights and movement. An awesome gig. Still rocking.
