Yeah, not far from me. Every cruiser was flying past in a hurry that morning, two, three at a time... Knew something was up. Didn't know until the news later that night.

I expect Royals in the city to be severely 'hat racked' trimmed in the near future.

My first thought was as that it was a royal palm.  Those things are HUGE and very heavy when they come down.   Sad that it had to take a life.

We have Oak Trees that drop whole limbs out here, during drought periods. They won't cut them down over that. It's sad for sure. Imagine that happening to you.

They say more palms (coconuts) kill people than sharks from falling nuts. Watch out for sure with!

It certainly happens, although this statistic might be exaggerated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_coconut
Both of these outcomes are at least an order or two of magnitude less likely than dying from being struck by lightning—the archetypical unlikely death—so I'd not worry about then unduly!

Very sad but it sounds like the palm initiated an accident, which precipitated him hitting the curb and losing control.  Motorcycle accidents are far more dangerous than falling palms.  I had two friends die in morotcycle accidents, yet another one inexplicably survived a 60 mph wipeout on a sandy spot on a turn in the road where the bike cartwheeled in front of us.    He stood up after he was (fortunately) separated from the bike and had road rash all over his back.  After that I stopped riding as I had two kids.  That said I would never plant a royal palm or a coconut over a road.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Widow-makers.. Yes, they're scary. I live under a giant old doug fir, about 200 to 250 ft high. The smaller sticks falling from up there can kill you.
