Best Caryota for Zone 9b

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello, I live In Inland Southern California and would like to grow a type of Caryota. Where I am temps in the high 90s sometimes low hundreds are not uncommon but winters are mild (low 40s at most usually) and most of the time get decent rain for here. My question is which type of Caryota would do best in the climate? I cant put it in full or partial sun. I really want Caryota urens cause of the speed of growth (I’m not very patient) 😂

You do know that a Caryota palm is known botanically as a monocarpic plant? This means that after it finishes flowering, the entire trunk dies.

It's timber for them...

Welcome to PalmTalk!  I'm on the other side of the continent, but Caryota mitis performs well here.

i have urens and gigas growing in 9b in santa clarita.  i believe there is a palm talk user in riverside that has a fairly large gigas growing in his front yard.  it handles the cold better than the heat ... at least for me. the santa anas definitely desiccate the leaves so my advice is to keep them well hydrated.
