This week in Texas is going to be extremely cold, concerns for tropical plants and plants that can get damaged at temperatures below 32°F (0°C). Temperatures expected to get as low is 14°F (-10°C) in the Austin area. Corpus Christi can get as low as 20°F to 23°F (6°C-5°C).

The front just arrived here in west Houston, down to 41F at ~3:30 pm after a high of 60F just an hour ago.

Check out the current temps!

Texas is getting hit way too hard. Seems like most places are dropping like 2 USDA zones below normal.

@Xenon Have you got clear skies or cloud cover now/tonight? Radiational cooling sucks this close to solstice due to these long nights. That was the main thing that stung me recently. Having some could cover may be the difference between a 20F low or a 10F low for you.

SCW is now forecasting -10C/14f for Houston. It looks like you have some decent mulch down @Xenon. That's what I'm counting on to protect most things that have the option of growing back.

Oh no this is the advective Siberian Express plowing through at full force. The only thing moderating this is sheer latitude, the winds are so strong even coastal moderation is almost negated. Tampico (22*N) is not forecast to get above 60F all weekend and Veracruz (19*N) will struggle to hit 70F.

But yes, the clouds are supposed to clear sometime tonight and the mercury will tank🥶. Only the southern tip of TX might be saved somewhat by increasing cloud cover through the night.

The covers partially blew off on my big Monsteras so I'm a bit bummed. At least they grow fast. I've never had an issue with mulch/lack of mulch and dieback perennials. Most zone 10 stuff came back from the ground after 2021 for me, some more slowly than others. Most of my protection efforts were focused on the crownshafted palms, tropical fruit trees, and variegated aroids.

NWS has Katy at 14F and Houston at 15F. Basically ZERO heat island effect (central Houston is usually 4-5 degrees warmer than me) 🥶

My oldest plantings are from Mar 21, so I don't have a reference point for the dieback perennials growing back here. I'm glad to hear your tropical stuff recovered well last time, mine are well mulched and maybe half are covered. I reserved lights for one of my bottlebrushes and have heater cables on my passion fruits. Palms either got foil insulation wrapping or covered buckets filled with leaves.

I got my preparations done right as that powerful wind blew in so hard at 5:30, it immediately removed some of my coverings that I thought were solid, got everything fixed up again and holding decently for now, but that wind is no joke

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

The temperatures in Dallas are already nuts. I have just been having a look on Wunderground and they are getting smashed again there. Already pushing -12C / 10F at 6-7pm with a brutal -20C / -5F windchill. That is just bonkers. They're probably going down to -16C / 3F tonight if they have clear skies. That would be carnage, again.

I was crying over an ultimate low of -8C / 17F and no wind last week, so it puts things into perspective. Dallas is already 4C / 8F colder than my lowest temp during the freeze and a staggering 10C / 20F colder than central London's lowest. They have to get through the night now as well though. Any remaining Filifera's from the 2021 event are really going to get tested again. Are there any CIDP still standing? I'm sure a few managed to come back, right? Those crowns will still be delicate from the 2021 defoliation.

The front still hasn't made it to the RGV: McAllen 68F, Brownsville 61F, South Padre Island 62F. NWS downgraded the lows significantly a few hours ago, especially for the coast/SPI (39F -> 33F). The Laguna Madre is pretty warm and surf temp is mid-upper 60s; how cold will it actually get???

Hope all of you fair well through this.  Going through it year after year is stressful and deflating.

Keep the good work up Xenon! I would recommend covering them. It brings the temperature underneath the blanket and keeps the palm trees warm.

@Xenon

Looks like neutral or El-Nino ENSO will be in place starting next year. Hopefully that can afford milder winter periods for Houston to "recover averages" given these past two years of set-back. Then maybe the prevailing pattern might be "reshuffled' afterwards?

These got left outside at work. What a soggy mess. Even the snowman decoration melted. Taller planter was a bunch of Monstera
