Albuquerque palm trees at the zoo

Hi, my name is Gabriel, this is a second account, my first account will pop up later in this post. Anyways I went to the zoo the other day and saw all the palm trees there. There is so much palm trees there, there is windmill palms sabal minors everywhere. By the alligator exhibit to the left of the entrance there is a little sabal Minor with seeds on them. By The Monkees there's a giant sabal that is 15 ft tall with loads of seeds on it, mabey a palmetto? Also next to it another sabal with seeds. Currently right now in 2022 they are building a new exhibit and there is a group of windmill palms that I believe made seeds because there's babies under it. I didn't get to take pictures of any of them that much but I did take a picture of the big sabal with seeds.IMG_20221203_124328.thumb.jpg.9722baec25177a21ea04be1cb092250f.jpg

From what I can see that truck looks impressive for a Sabal palm in Albuquerque, wish I could see more.

I am going again next year to take more pictures of the palms. I don't think it is a sabal Minor because it is too big I think it is a palmetto. Also many trachy's there I will take pics of too.

There are a few photos of the large Sabal at the BioPark that I took 5 years ago on this thread:

Hey ChrisA, I saw your post on the sabal at the zoo and it is a lot bigger today, mabey 5ft more trunk. Also by it is some European fan palms or Mediterranean fan palms, I don't know much about European fans and Mediterranean fans. But those sabals are impressive.

Good Morning Gabriel,

That's impressive!  I can't wait to see how it looks now with more trunk on it.  It's been a few years since I've been to the zoo. I remember there were a few Mediterranean Fans in the Africa section, but they died out a long time ago. There are some nice Windmills scattered about the zoo (near the reptile house, and a particularly pretty one down the hill from the Mexican Wolves in the bird area). If you happen to get back there I'd love to see some updated photos!

Take care,

Chris

I had an idea, I got some sabal seeds from the zoo, and some are bad, but most are good. My idea was to go somewhere moist and where there is always water and throw some seeds around to see if they grow because at the zoo there is some naturalized seedlings around the big sabal and in the monkey exhibit.

Btw this is my other account. Gabrielpalms

Thanks Gabriel. Cool info. As to your larger Sabal at the ABQ Zoo, I'm told that is Sabal mexicana and not S. palmetto. I'm not sure if there are more, but it seems like I was told there are.

Please share more pics of the different palms that you describe, plus their surroundings with entire plants. Not all of us can easily go to ABQ! It's hard to tell from close-ups, though seeing some palms there produce seed is cool. At least 20 years ago when I last visited the entire zoo, there were quite a few Sabal minor including some volunteering in one area. This was before smart phones or even carrying my old-style digital camera much. About 2008 or so, but before smart phones, I recall some really nice desert plantings near where we saw an outdoor concert.

If you don't wanna try my yard, there is this other spot in a sweet microclimate.
