My trunking maypan coco in palm coast Florida

Featured Replies

Planted 2 years ago as a 7 gallon. Covered one night each winter but no heat has been applied. Survived 29 for 3 hours last year with two comforters around it.

This year and going forward it will get some c9 incandescent bulbs and 12 foot posts around it for an enclosure.

Nice looking.  What is the circumference of it at the base of the crown right above the woody trunk?  And  what is the circumference of it where the woody trunk is?  Also, what would you estimate is the overall height of it?  Thanks.

John

Nice coconut. I added a maypan to a spot in my now-decimated jungle. I’d looked for them in the past but they are very hard to find. Used to be common in the past but few growers have them nowadays. Not sure why.

Yeah I got this one two years ago right after a cold snap. The grower had a ton and clearanced them. I rehabbed her but probably should have added a heat source last year. Felt like they were hot and popular 2-3 years ago and have cooled down a lot like you said

While I'll always have a soft spot for the Atlantic Tall (Jamaican Tall), I honestly think the Maypan is one of the better coconuts for marginal areas.  I have both and the Maypan took less damage than the Atlantic Tall.  I planted a Panama Tall near in January last year before we got the quick cold snaps, and it performed very well.  Since that is one of the parents of the Maypan, that helps explain the performance.  If the Maypan hits maturity, wait until you see the size of the coconuts.

In the photo below, the basketball is a regulation Men's basketball (29.5" circumference) being dwarfed by the coconut of a Maypan:

Wow thanks for sharing I had no idea. My maypan really doesn’t get bothered by anything around 36. The second we creep close to 32 though it shows up. I think just being aware of that and providing some heat and some overhead cover while it’s manageable should help

So it’s not a myth that some coconut varieties are cold hardier than others? Like the maypan.

Some of them do seem to have a slight edge.  The Maypan grows in a more exposed location than the Atlantic Tall or the Panama Tall in my garden.  I bought what I thought was a Fiji Dwarf that doesn't appear to be one that didn't do all that great in 2022.  It's growing well now, but it took a lot of damage.  The spicata hybrid I have seems pretty sensitive by comparison as well.  The reports for January 2022 and December 2022 in the Freeze Damage Data section illustrate it better than I can explain with words.
