Let's see what we actually prefer. Often when threads start out to nominate one's favorite palm, people start listing more than one, this polls forces you to select one over the others.

These polls are kind of like asking "which of your children do you love best?"  But for today (and today only) I'll go for the Dypsis leptocheilos, just because I have one waiting to go in the ground.

Dypsis Leptocheilos hands down. Still waiting for those buggers to sprout. I'd say Archontophoenix Purpurea is a close second.

I went for Archontophoenix purpurea, but it was very close for me between that and Dictosperma album, especially as you were including all varieties, as I think rubra is fantastic.

Nearly 50 votes in, that's tremendous. It looks a dead heat at this point between the cuban royal, Roystonea regia and the regular redneck palm of madagascar, Dypsis leptocheilos.

Two palms any good palm enthusiast simply must have (as long as the climate allows).

Archontophoenix purpurea and Dypsis pembana not that far behind.

Polls like this one really do show what we consider great palms and may even illuminate those considering what to collect and/or plant in the future. Sure, other palms could have been listed, we'll see about listing those in further polls.

On the strength and popularity of this, I shall endeavor to produce another poll some time later, unless someone else wants to create one themselves. Be my guest.

signing off for now, and as I always say "the palm you don't have, is the palm you must get next."

Wal - are you grouping your categories by similarities? This first group is all crown-shafted pinnate. You certainly picked a tough bunch of palms to choose from. I went with the Pemba because it's the most unusual one on the list I'm trying to grow. Hard to believe the Bangalow got more votes than the Ptychosperma... zero votes so far.

I think the red neck palm is D. lastelliana.  D. leptocheilos is the more common teddy bear.

Common names aren't really worth the common paper they're written on and me being an old advocate for commonising common names knows what eyes talking about.

Redneck is teddy bear is redneck is leptocheilos is redneck is lastelliana is highland redneck is, well, common names, we use them and abuse them. Don't get too concerned about them, nurseries are to blame from my experience, a new one can open up and just whack a brand new common name to anything and it just might stick. Speaking of sticking, I'll try and stick to the botanical names but I can't help myself neither, it's a trap for young players and I'm still a young player I'm afraid.

I went with Roystonia regia this time.  I like how they can handle more intense heat and sun than the Archontophoenix spp.  I almost picked the D. lepto but I thought about the growth rate of the Royals and went with that.  Plus, like Kim, I've got a few waiting to go into the ground and I'm excited about them.

Why doesn't anyone like Ptychosperma elegans?????

I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I voted Dypsis leptocheilos, but I was really thinking of Ptychosperma elegans too. A beautiful solitaire is a sight to behold. Much underated. One to plant in groves of at least a dozen I think. Let there skinny trunks all reach for the light at the same time.

Virtually noone grows or sells the redneck here in Perth. Nursery people say they don't sell. Yet the poll says there it. I think they're fantastic and grow well here. I have 450 in pots here. You know, you order 500 seeds thinking you'll get 300 to come up, only to find 600 turn up and most come up anyway. I must admit I'm not looking after them cos they're everywhere......

Roystonea regia all the way. I love this palm because it does not take a lifetime to have a massive palm like Jubea or CIDP. Not that I don't love the other two, but there is no way I can grow a Jub here and CIDPs only look fair and suffer from a lot of diseases here in FL. CIDP never looks as good here as it does in California or other Med climates. Here is my one and only R. regia. Wish I had a couple more. Only bad thing about R. regia is that it will get killed by the next big freeze, whenever that may be, possibly leaving a huge trunk that I will have to pay a lot to have removed.

Wal,

I can always count on you to make me laugh!  I am with you on the common names though.  I learned the botanical names and sometimes don't know the common names!

Do you plan on attending the biennial next year?

My favorite on this list is D. pembana - because I don't have one!  Hopefully that problem will be solved soon.
