I visited a customers house on Sanibel today, around 8 ft of surge. Went out to Captiva to look at another future job site. Here are some pictures of palms from Ground Zero of Ian. A lot of work being done, but will be a long road to recovery.

Yes, it is bad. One major good note, the historic cemetery and Church by the Sea in Captive survived, not sure how being directly on gulf beach. Power still off to most houses, they have to have a structural engineer and electrical contractor sign off , before power is turned on, same on Ft Myers Beach.

Those houses look surprisingly good.

What palms did well, and which ones suffered the most?

Modern, hurricane-code buildings.  Those metal roofs, concrete block walls, and impact windows held up well.

Salt water inundation and mechanical trauma, followed by no water/irrigation for a month seems to be a bad combo for many palms.

Oh my..., that looks worse than I expected! Those gardens look like being wiped out...

Glad to see that the houses stood their ground. Btw., Miyako island got hit by a similar super typhoon in 2003 -

after that building of wooden houses was prohibited. But for some reason this ban got lifted and you can see

timber houses being constructed again... (Looking at these images I am not really sure if this is a good decision...)

How sad. Looks like a third world country in the Caribbean. I worked for a year on Captiva and made the drive over through Sanibel 5 days a week. Unrecognizable now.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

Yes it does, looks similar as after Charlie. He are pictures of the cemetery and Chapel by the Sea on Captiva.
