I'm a Palm Talk neophyte so I would like to bring up a topic that has probably been posted a million times already ... but  it would be interesting to us new people and maybe a refresher for all you veterans!   Or maybe you found some new faves!

Please post a pic of your favorites!!

(plus I'm too lazy to search through all those archives to find this topic!! :P )

60 meters above the sea level with less than 1000 mm annual rain.

Temperature range is 16 - 38 °C , average is 28 °C approximately.

Start to collected palms , cycads and succulent plants since 2004.

Hi Enjula!

Because of my climate, I haven't had too much experience with the really nice exotic ones so......

This will sound very average to many, I know, but my favorite is still the Bsimarkia Nobilis. I just love them.

This might be replaced however when my Dypsis Baronii really gets going. One I think that I would really love though is a Ceroxylon Ventricosum. Very nice.

Hope this response wasn't too protracted :D

It doesn't mater if it is exotic or not! Your fave is your fave! Heck even washies are considered exotic somewhere on the planet. (Right Kris??)

My favorite for today is a hybrid palm actually, sorry mister purist, but I happen to love the way my Dypsis cabadae x lucubensis is growing. I have purchased more of this palm actually and will plant it maybe this weekend. Ask me again in a month or so, I will have a different answer.

This question is always relevant to our particular fancy at any given time so it may be posted as a regular say 6 monthly thread.

Happy Gardening

My favorites have changed slightly over the past decades, but mainly they are Licuala species and their allies, like Johannesteijsmannia and Rhapis. Itaya has also been a constant fav of mine, often called the "Licuala of the new world". There are so many others that come in close behind.

There will be several posts because I can't decide right now.  And these are pictures that I have surfed in the net.

One is definitely the Silver Joey.  I don't know how many decades it will take to grow mine to this size but I am willing to wait.

Licuala Mapu is definitely a crowd pleaser.  I have one plant and am trying to sprout seeds.  After 2 and a half months--nothing yet.  But it will be worth the wait if ever they do sprout.

Would love to have a whole corner of the garden filled with this palm.

My favorite is still the Madagascan Foxtail with Clinostigma Samoense and Neoveitchia Storkii closing in fast  :D . That said, I love all palms so this is definately subject to change. It looks like paul inflicted you with the palm sickness  ??? . It's very contagious and impossible to get rid of so welcome aboard!

Please tell me that a botanical garden didn't put a nail through that palm to hold up a sign telling people what it is? ???

Hi Angela,   I allways love to see this topic come up.

Everyone has such great photos and different oppinions on there favorites.

My top three  are,

1. Rhopalostylis sapida

2. Sabal mauritiiformis

3. Dypsis decipiens

I once had the pleasure of  shareing lunch with Pauleen Sullivan and when I asked her what was her favorite palm  was she said "the one I'm looking at".

How great is that.

Take care Angela.

Wal, what makes you like this plant so much? I have one too. After the next leaf base is removed, it will have its first ring of trunk. The thing is fast and adapted to full, hot SoCal sun after only one new frond. Not a single burn on the new ones. I only got it this Spring and I am hoping the cross will create a little more cold tolerance as found in many crosses.

Like I said I'm kinda new- I have learned a lot of the botanical names of a lot of common palms through osmosis by being the girlfriend of a palm nerd.  Pictures would really help me out!

Thanks in advance :)

Reds go well with greens that's for sure. You can't have too much colour can you? Rhapis are high on my list particularly the variegated forms, see...

Hedyscepe has always been one of my favourites, but its becoming a close contest after the performance of some of my other palms.  Archonto. purpurea, Rhopalostylis baueri, Dypsis onilahensis and all Sabals are among my favourites.  As for some of the more tropical that I can't grow, I've always admired Attalea cohune, Neoveitchia storkii and Lodoicea.
