Washingtonia Filifera SEEDS Survivors of -2, many days below freezing.

Collectorpalms

Recommended Posts

Maybe one of the last chance to get some Washingtonina Filifera survivors that had handle the Worst winters over and over again In Texas. This is good year because all of the weaker palms died, but before new mutts brought back into the areas. Give to friend family put them on Facebook marketplace in 3 years when they reach beefy size.

I have a few orders going out this week. I think I can save on shipping by going first class. I just had to by shipping supplies since inflation and will have a better idea soon if I can bring it down a bit.

Still have some fresh seeds, collected more this weekend.

Who mounted the electric spotlights to the trunk of the palm?   TXDOT? 🤔

Defunct business. I found the old Filiferas at two different places that were probably from the 60s that probably will be leveled soon. Also one from a semi shady Gas Station in Dallas. So I didn't look weird or anything picking seeds at a random Gas station. ( Not pictured on this thread). Tried to check out seeds at a closed mall locally and security ran me off, literally.

@Collectorpalms Do you have a picture of the Butia that the seeds came from?  Or the Sabals?  Thanks.

Sabal Brazoriensis:

The mother palm is from seeds I collected in late 2000s in Brazoria county at the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge. Located in NW rural Brazos County on the River. Pictures early Spring 2022.

Butia Palm:

Right of Brazoriensis, not sure which this one is, I grew so many because I had a nursery that it may have been one I planted instead. Maybe lost tag. About 50% of the Butia died. Located in NW rural Brazos county on the Brazos River. Pictures early 2022.

Washingtonia Filibusta:

This one is a rocket ( ~30 Ft in 15 years) and shows no damage from cold or fungus on trunk. Only one of two Washingtonia Survivors out of 25 Washys at my house. This one came out of 4F and grew fast. A lot of Washingtonia that initially survived died, so the speed of coming out of the cold really helped it. Still shows leaf damage at around 17F, where Filifera remain green longer.
unfortunately, they placed a utility line directly over it, so I assume it is my last year of having it.

Sabal Louisiana: This was supposed to be Sabal Domingensis. No damage at 4F. Moderate Grower. Has about 2Ft of trunk in 10-15 years. Pictured spring 2022.

Sabal Mexicana XL, it’s crown is about 25% larger than the more common Texas Sabal. I’ll have to get better pictures in the future, but it is currently being overtaken by a wild grapevine. Survived 4F, but burned. I Grew it from seed. Twice as fast as Sabal Palmetto. Has grown about 15Ft of trunk in 15 years. Add the large leaves it is quite impressive. Pictures from spring 2022.

Sabal Minor McCurtain: Came from seeds I collected from the Red Slough in McCurtain county Oklahoma about 17 years ago. I have a few, the sun grown ones are more vigorous than deep shade ones. At first glance looks looks like other big Sabals, but the leaves are only weakly costapalmate, so leaves lay flat, where the other are strongly costapalmate, forming recurved frond and almost taco shaped. Pictured 2022.

They are ready when they start falling from the tree. I am guessing my trees are not too much longer.  Late October and November.
Maybe they were waiting for the first cold front ( came 3 weeks late). I’ll get pictures.

I placed an order with him as well, I know Ryan has been a member of PT for a long time, I think his disappearance is strange.  I also hope he's alright, although I don't know him, I have a hard time thinking he'd just flake unless something happened.

I Posted a seller warning in the Seller/Review section.  I hope he is alright, but you can see when someone last checked in and he has checked in multiple times without responding in the past weeks.  As I write this he last checked in 15 hours ago, you can see by clicking on his username.  Not cool.

You can file a claim with Paypal to get your money back.  It takes about a month, as they reach out to the seller for their side of the dispute.  If the seller does not respond in a couple of weeks, then they close the case and refund your money (at least, that was my experience).  I had to go this route with an order from the @TexasColdHardyPalms website.

Not sure what is going on here, as this seller has been a long time contributor on this forum.  I hope everything is alright.  I know it sucks when this type of thing happens.  If you need some Washingtonia sp. seeds, I can probably get you some freshly germinated seedlings that survived the freeze here in San Antonio (free of charge).  PM me if interested.
