Been in the shade house about 2 weeks, time to plant out.  Dug the hole yesterday afternoon and got it in the ground before lunch.  It's right on the main path so I can't wait for that first new RED leaf.

Update.  Almost 1 year and it's growing but I haven't seen any red yet.

Seems happy so I bought another and planted it in a spot where it will get a lot more light.  Gonna put a Red Cedar in the bed behind it.  The cedar is only about 1 foot tall.

Ironically I just picked one up a 1G from @DoomsDave a few days ago. @Palmizand I stopped by and after seeing his, I had to try one. Dave, please post your baby if you get a chance and show this species is indeed possible in CA.
I’m hoping for some growth….any growth different than the rest of the California hopefuls who have tried. Glutton for punishment most likely.

They will grow here, just at a very slow speed.  Any setback can be fatal due to the glacial .pace of growth and hence recovery.   Jim was successful as he mentioned above.  I had a couple of failures in the past with them and have forgotten what triggered their ultimate downward spiral.  Hopefully starting larger will make it less susceptible to minor bumps from kids or pets.  Good luck and keep us posted on its growth.

Any faster for you in Hilo than in Fallbrook Jason?  I assume you tried it in your old garden but don't specifically recall seeing any.

I lost mine this spring after 3 years of incredibly slow growth outdoors in the ground. The new red leaf was nice... while it lasted.😒

They are slow, even here in Hilo but, do pick up speed as they age. I planted three from seed on a slope with good drainage and fairly close together because of their sparse habit.

Mine do throw nice dark red/ maroon leaves but, like other Chambeyronia, some only have a green new leaf.

Mine threw a very red new leaf every seven to ten months for several years here in the Bay Area but succumbed to last winter’s very very long chilly wet spell.

They take 6-8 leaves before they start becoming red

Kris, the three in the garden have always thrown a new red leaf even as small plants. Could be variable like others in the genus.

I planted 2 in June 2020 west of a big C. prestoniana. They get lots of full sun in the afternoon. They are doing great, new leaves are always dark red.

I have 3 little guys all about this size. Had them a little over a year now. The new leaf blushes red in spots but thats it so far. I’m hoping at least one of them grows into a Texas Chainsaw Massacre blood bath like John and Matt have there.

Is that the watermelon form John? Hard to say but I think I see striations on the leaf base. This is right up there with my favourite palms and yours is a beauty!

The picture above was from a while ago, but I’ve posted it here already. One of my favorite small palms; just gets better and better with time.

@D. Morrowii any update on your Divaricata?  I have one from Floribunda and am trying to pick a spot for it.  So far I have read they need shade in FL, but also that they are painfully slow.  Any experience with sun in Merritt Island?

Posted

Here’s a shot of the biggest one from a couple of weeks ago. All 3 are still alive but still in pots. I haven’t tried to acclimate any to sun yet. I’m waiting for them to get bigger and for a shady spot.
