This Pandanus furcatus has been growing at 43ºN for ten years now, and it is happy. It has even seen snow. and freezing temperatures , never below -1,5ºC. Look at the aerial roots!

Not mine, but growing in the neighborhood here in Leucadia.  One of the problems of carrying a prime (fixed focal length) lens is that sometimes you can't get back far enough to get the entire plant when its big like this and have no room to backup further.  It took two photos to capture it.

No idea.  As far as identifying which species currently grow here in Coastal Southern California, I'm sure they have some at the San Diego Zoo and one could find out the species.  I don't recall any at the former Quail Botanic Garden located here in Encinitas (renamed San Diego Botanic Garden) but that isn't to say that they don't have any growing.  While I know some of the plantings at the Huntington Gardens located closer to you, I'm not that familiar with their gardens to know if they are growing any Pandanus.  Perhaps someone that frequents the Huntington can post photos of any if they are growing them as well as species names.

is the panandus baptisii (variegated yellow and green) screwpine as cold hardy as this one? you mentioned that yours has seen snow and freezing temps.

I'm looking to get one for myakka city which is 9b.  so 99% of the time it's fine it's just when a freeze comes in.

Hi. I didn´t know about P. Baptistii. I´ve read on the internet that it comes from New Guinea and that it is frost sensitive. I have always read that Furcatus, since it comes from the Hymalayas,  is the hardiest of all, but I´m not sure.

Here it is in the snow back in late February 2018. It snowed for 3/4 hours but the snow dissapeared by 11 am and the minimum  temperature was about -0,5ºC. It has seem lower temperatures in clear nights, other times though. Supposedly I am in a 10A zone.

Just got back from a Lightshow at San Diego Botanic Gardens, and thought I would share these photos of well-lit Pandanus...

Also have been meaning to post this GLORIOUS grouping owned by a California palm seller (that we visited in August). These look amazing as a group, and are perfectly lit by the sun in this photo...
