Butia x Jubea in Dallas zone 8b back in the day. This seedling grown palm lived eventually for 21 years unprotected

I live just 3 or 4 miles away and used to go by this palm and check up on it. I have pics over the years as it grew and was a completely neglected other than occasionally someone (who knows who) would cut off dead fronds. It survived Feb 2021 and was pushing out leaves that spring/summer. I went back at some point and it was gone. It was not cut down but dug up. The ground was freshly disturbed but had been smoothed out. 

I was really curious if some “palm rustler” got it or if someone found the owner of the property and bought it from them. That idea had crossed my mind before! Sad it is gone.

Thanks for the info! Glad there's a chance it's still alive. 

There's also a tall one off corner of Kelly Perkins rd and W pleasant ridge rd in Arlington, but street view hasn't been updated since Jan 2024 and I haven't been by since then so not sure the status of it currently

Keep seeing zone 8a listed for Dallas. 

 

Looking at the annual minimum lows at colder DFW, the last cold six years(2020-2025) come in for a average 15.2f. 

Are we calling the last two years the zone,  or am I missing something ?

 

This is DFW, Dallas is a tad warmer on average.

Dallas-Fort Worth area, the low for the 2023-2024 winter season was 11∘F, recorded on November 27, 2023.

we have had 4 consecutive winters with 8a or colder temps. I live here and unfortunately get to see the damage each year. Many zone 8b plants that had thrived for the previous 20 years were taken out in 2021 by the cold or severely damaged with subsequent mild winters to allow recovery. Widespread Plants like pittosporum, Indian  hawthorn, butia odorata, confederate jasmine, satsumas

Somebody should inform the NWS that their records are incorrect . That is a huge discrepancy .

As far as 2021, I feel the warmest winter on record in Dallas, up until the cold hit in late February, greatly contributed to the palm death in Dallas.

TonyDFW your Brahea armata is huge inspiration to plant many and be patient. I lost a few small sized specimen but will keep growing from seed and plant them out.

Pretty incredible to keep a Jubaea growing for so long in Dallas. Did it have to be trunk cut at some point?

@TonyDFW Incredible photos as always.  The house leopards are a nice touch, too.  

I hadn't noticed the Chamaedoreas before.
