Last year I collected a lot of seeds from area Sabal palmetto, saw palmetto, Sabal minor and livestonia,  I scattered several hundred seeds all around the yard.

I noticed that several are popping up now. I’m finding more and more every day.

Very cool.

I did something similar this year. Gathered a couple hundred local seeds, germinated them and planted the germinated seeds a few weeks back lining my entire property ha.

Its going to be a solid wall of sabals.

Did you just randomly scatter yours in the yard? Or a method to the madness?

I like that idea of a wall of sabals, that’s gonna look awesome, I wouldn’t mind doing something like that.
I just randomly scattered them all around, I have a ravine in the back yard that separates my property from the neighbors and I threw hundreds of seed in there, I’m sure in time it’ll be loaded with sabals.

Oh to be able to just toss and grow! Reported earlier about a surprise Brazoria Catarinensis that I tried to germinate in damp spagnum moss…all the seeds molded in short order so I pulled everything out of the bag to dry on the garden bench…enter my ever present squirrel infestation and the seeds vanished from the bench…well, a year later, just off the ground level deck, I found a six inch strapling growing and was amazed…the seed made it through winter and spring in total shade…no winter protection whatsoever…I potted it up in full sun and it’s getting its second strap…maybe has some beneficial, cold hardy genes that may help it handle my zone 7 winters with protection, but nothing outrageous…anyway, nice to see all your volunteers…

Yeah I remember seeing your post and wondering if I was going to see some seedlings pop up in my yard,  I spread my seeds around last October I think it was and lucky me seedlings are here, I’ll be on the lookout for more. I also left some livestonia seeds in a pot of over winter too and forgot about them and I have seedlings of those too now.

What an excellent idea! Over time the natives will create a grove and understory, and the Livistona will give it some pizzazz. Well done. I don't envy your weeding chore though. In this part of South Alabama, Cinnamomum camphora and Smilax would quickly overwhelm seedlings. Fortunately, camphor tree is easy to pull and, in a couple of years, the S. minor will begin to shade out the competition.

Yeah the weeding part I’m still trying to figure out. There are probably so many more seedlings that I can’t even see right now that are hidden among grasses and weeds.
