The weeds are winning. I fear I am going to have to resort to chemical warfare in this particular battle. Any suggestions for weed control in St. Augustine lawns that won't harm my palms or at least will keep the harm to a minimum? Most of the stuff at the box stores has Atrazine in it. What will this do to my palms? Does it actually control weeds in the lawn? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

I love St. Augustine grass. It is my favorite. The problem is that I have never seen a good looking St. Austine lawn before. Never. I don't know why that is. That is why I have never put one in.

Ah, St. Aug grass.

It promises so much.  Grass in the shade!  Yippee!  Under the avocado tree!  Yee-haw.

It'll grow in Florida.  Well, I'm not in Florida . . . .

So will Bermuda Grass.

I've never seen St. Aug look good.  It always looks like the Cookie Monster would look if you turned him into a green lawn, then gave him some fungus.  Ack.

On the other hand, it's as relentless as terminal cancer about invading places it's not supposed to go.

Roundup's the best treatment for it.

Wood chips are much better in the shade than Cookie Monster Grass.

Believe me Dave, I wish I could erradicate all of it and have nothing but landscape beds, paths, mulch and rocks. But, the evil HOA dictates that I keep a St. Augustine lawn...Unfornately I am going to probably have to treat with some chemical that may harm my palms a bit. I am afraid that palms and weeds may look the same to these chemicals.

Bill-

If its any consolation, Ive never had any problems with atrazine and palms.  I used to put down alot of Scotts Bonus S on the lawn right in the vicinity of palms and never noticed anything detrimental.

As of now, Ive got about 200 sq feet of lawn left so I dont have to think about it much.

I'm with Dave.  The best thing for St. Augustine id Roundup!  But since you have the evil HOA that insists on you having that water hogging, needy, creepy, crawly stuff, I guess you will have to use some chemicals.  I haven't heard of any problems with atrazine and palms.  I even put Roundup around mine as long as they have a trunk and no visible roots.

How about some atrazine for the evil HOA??

Thanks Larry, I put some down yesterday and watered it in. I hope it works on the weeds.

Whe I first joined the forum, I remember a weed topic and someone said they never use anything with "cide" in the name around their palms.

Hehe I was LMBO - this is so true, the stupid stuff ends up where you don't want it and fries out where you do want it.  Needy???  Sheesh, constant watering, chemicals... and ferts to make it grow so it will require constant mowing!

I'm confused about why Roundup won't work in your case?  It will definitely kill the St. Augustine and definitely won't hurt your palms.  Are you worried it will kill the whole lawn if you apply around the edges or something?

Vote with your feet, to a new spot.

Or, even better, pressure the Legislature to regulate those evil [out-of-wedlock-children].

Ahem.

Or Congress.

Actually, I'm 100% in favor of that.  May even start a letter-writing campaign.

If there's anything really bad for the state, it's these busybodies who demand a certain amount of water-hogging lawn (only the thirsty St. Aug, nothing less) and it must be kept emerald-green at all times.

Problem:  we desperately need to CONSERVE water, not waste it.  Time to get rid of HOAs for this reason, if no other.

Of course, there's another problem - they infringe on personal liberty.  A whole nother topic for a whole nother day.

Meanwhile, I'm glad I live in a "modest" neighborhood, where palms are planted all over and no HOA to regulate them out of the front yard.

Endeth the rant.

Sunny-

I will have to disagree!

No one is forced to live in an HOA neighborhood.  It is but another choice when choosing a dwelling.  As such, this adds freedom of choice...it does not infringe.

I thought atrazine  was not suppose to be applied when temps are above 80 during the day, maybe the rules have changed.

I have to admit this has been a bad year for my lawn, major weed infestation. I usually only spot treat with atrazine  rather then dose the whole yard.

Since my goal is no grass except the ornamental kind I don't put anything on my lawn.  Just mow everything and it all looks green.  I just put a double dose of Roundup on another area that will be turned into a bed for more palms and other neat stuff.  The weeds are much less fussy about water, fertilizer, and everything else that the grass.

I do have some kind of grass growing in my paddocks that my horses don't eat and that only grows about 1" high.  Completely carefree.  Not sure what it is but I might get used to the idea of having that in my yard.

You should try preventing the weeds with a pre-emergent like Lesco's Pre-M or Dimension. I've been using Dimension for over a year now (twice a year) and it works wonders. It keeps the crab grass from germinating, and crab grass has to be one of the worst weeds in a St. Augustine lawn. That stuff will certainly choke out the St. Augustine if you don't stay on top of it.

Good luck!
