Kentiopsis magnifica

Featured Replies

I just purchased two 15 gallon Kentiopsis magnifica from JDA's. Of course I bought before I did research. I searched Google and there really is not a lot of info on this plant.

Anyone in SoCal have it growing in the ground? How did it do this Winter?

15 gallon Kentiopsis magnifica would cost an arm and a leg here. Never seen them in big pots or bags.

Also here too. Your lucky if you can find one in a 1gallon size pot. I'm a little jealous.......

Mines bigger. :P  (but not in the ground of course)   Len, Dean and Jeff Breaseau have them in the ground, but about the same size as yours.  Len, mine sat right where it was over the cold span with sheet on top and a halogen light pointing at the piersoniorum and the magnifica.

Glad you got them, I told Kim she should get one some time back..... but as you know, not cheap.

Overall, I think hi heat is the enemy, I would treat like a kentia. eventually will take some good sun, but all I've seen are in the shade. Mine probably gets more sun than most.

oh yes, I've seen both "in-grounders" since the winter and look fine.

Post a photo of the tree.  A 15 gallon K. Magnifica would be a pricey palm.

I have K. Olivoformus and Pyrsorianum (sp?) all doing fine here in Dana Point.  I have tried to grow K. Magnifica from seed and had a hard time germinating them plus the ones that did pop are sloooooooow.

Looking forward to that photo!

Jeff- when I was up there, I didn't see a Piersoniorum. (VERY rare) you maybe meant a Pyroformis?  Those seem to grow fairly fast and be colorful too. Great combination!  :D

I knew they were hard to find. Especially SoCal large. 15's here. FL maybe only 7's.

Dean, did you get a pic of Jeffs when you were there? How about yours? Oh... who am I fooling. Dean is never around here anymore. He is too cool for us now that he started palmpedia.net.

Bo, I know you stated you had one that has not started trunking yet. Do you have a pic (I am sure you do :) ) and any info when it was planted.

Yeah guys, Jim Wright's is a K. oliviformis.

My K. magnifica has been in the ground for at least seven years. It is in my most shaded area of all, and that is way too shady. I forgot about it for a couple of years and when I remembered, it was buried under a ton of old leaves. I thought for sure it would eventually rot away because of it's location. But last I checked it is still hanging on, with what is probably only about a leaf a year.

Edit: Len, we were writing at the same time. No, I did not see Jeff's when I was over there. I didn't realize these were such big deals. I'll have to take better care of mine.  :)

Len,

Well, talk about dedication, but despite a light rain I just went outside (at 9 p.m.) to get this photo for you!! And since I last posted on K. magnifica, this one has indeed begun to form a trunk. OK, just one node at this point, but it's a beginning!! :)  I bought this one in Aug 1997 in a 1G pot from Floribunda ($5 - what a deal!!).

Wouldn't Kentiopsis prefer more sun as it grows ? Is there any Kentiopsis sp. requiring or at least preferring more sun than the others ?

Me neither. Like I said I bought without doing research. I got it because it has a lot more red/purple in the spear and petiole and I like the bonus that the new leaf opens red. I am glad I have two now. :)

Bo, what dedication you have! If your plant is 10 years old, and I use my handy-dandy HI==>CA growth converter, I figure I will not see trunk for 25 years!

PS - anyone can make their own HI==>CA palm growth converter. You need 5 beers, 100 degree weather, boredom and complete lack of empirical data.

Bill, great shot. Looks like that photography class is paying off.  :P

Wal, I have no experience with Kentiopsis in sun other than K. oliviformis but man does this thing take a heck of a lot of sun.  I'd put it comparable to Archontophoenix.  As long as it's in a rich moist soil then it can handle it.....let it dry out and it'll burn.  They both acclimate at about the same size too, although the Kentiopsis oliviformis will take you several more years to get there.

So I was walking around the garden and saw this out in the back. It is not as bright red as Bo's, but still not bad. What a nice little surprise. :)

KMagnifica4.jpg

Mardy Darian was commenting on his "Super D. decipiens" explaining the color of the trunk, cronwshaft, petioles, etc. He then pointed out the new leaf is pink to red. He said when a palm is gorgeous in general and throws off a colorful leaf to top it off, it is like when you hit big time on the slots and then find out you also won a car. Good point.

Hell no. Still in a pot. I have learned from my mistakes last year. They shall wait until Spring, then they will be planted out. It was in the garage for a week. Once I put them in filtered light, they started growing faster and then this leaf opened. So I will give it more sun when I do plant out.

So BS stops by today and ask where my other Magnifica was. So I figured he was playing  a joke on me. Nope. Some scum bags stole one of them and a bunch of other plants and cycads from my yard. I hope they rot in hell. I have a good idea who but when asked, of course he had no involvement. However he was the only one that knew where stuff was to steal since he planted the stuff.

I am so pissed right now!

I think I coasted "up to" 23-24 mph once, most of the time it was below 20 mph.  I did call my work friend near you with the Gigas and was gonna stop by, but he was at soccer with his girls on Melrose, so I did a "drive by" to show off my new 15' tall green "whip antenna".
